Your opinion on tattoos and people who have them?

Often times I've heard people admit that when they see someone with more than a good few tattoos, they consider them to be a drug addict or some kind of rebel or something. Other people have been more than open at showing their disgust towards people who choose to have a lot of tattoos. I've heard people say girls with tattoos look like lesbians, I've heard people say tattoos are a way of seeking attention, and many other things that just seem so judgemental. What I would like to know is, what is your opinion on tattoos and people who have them? Honest opinions are always welcome.

You are asking this on a fairly liberal website, FYI...

I have a couple myself. I barely notice them and don't care whether others do and they do. I have a vine on my wrist with the Taurus and Capricorn symbol and the Aquarius symbol on my other wrist. They aren't huge but they're brightly colored and I'm pale.

They have meaning to me and I could care less what others think of them. A lot of people see tattoos as ruining one's body but there are far more acceptable ways to ruin your body that are much deeper than skin level so I have trouble taking that argument seriously, especially from someone who smokes or has kids.

People have a tendency to resent what they don't consider normal.

  • Has anyone ever noticed that most people without tattoos who prefer not to have them, tend to judge those who choose to have many tattoos, yet people with a lot of tattoos don't really ever seem to look at people without tattoos and say 'wow, look how ugly that looks, having no tattoos at all', its sad how some people can be so judgemental towards people who choose to ink their body, doesn't really matter what the tattoos are, where they are or what they mean, even if they don't have a meaning I don't think they should be a reason to judge somebody else, as I saw one comment saying that lots of obvious tattoos like face or hand tattoos reminded them of a criminal. I'm not a criminal, I'm 19 and I have many visible tattoos, and most of them have absolutely no meaning, I just like the way they look. I started getting tattoos at 14 years old and yes, I still like each and every single one of my tattoos and plan on getting many more. I'm not any different to any other decent human being, I'm not a party animal, I have never even gone near drugs and I care about living things and adore animals and children. Tattooed people are just normal people, and I appreciate all the open minded opinions. As for those people who might think tattoos will get ugly when you're older, guess what? You're going to be ugly when you're older with or without tattoos, your skin will sag and change colour just the same.

I have a tattoo myself and I hardly ever remember that its there. I dont care if anyone has any tattoos or not. Its actually more of a turn on for me if women do have tattoos on them.

  • I personally don't care or think badly of people with tats. Decades ago, the only people who would normally get tattoos were bikers and just general badasses - nowadays any joe-schmo can get one. There's hardly any bad stigma to getting one now as compared to before (unless you have visible obscene ones or any on the face).

I'm of the not give a fucking crap variety of human beings. I honestly don't give 2 shits what other people wear, what they eat, how they dress, what they are attracted to...I could go on and on and on. Some of the best people I've met are people who I disagree with on a bajillion levels...it makes them more interesting to me! I'm just really turned off by the notion of trying to convert others to my point of view, even though I have an opinion.

So...tats....couldn't give 2 dog turds. I thought about getting one when I was much younger...luckily, I decided to wait a year and reconsider whether I would still find my tat of choice to be super awesome...I did not!

In terms of finding tats to be attractive...I do, if they're good ones!

This is an opinion. I don't have any intentions of offending people who love their tattoos, but I personally don't prefer tattoos or piercings of any kind.

I personally find too many tattoos or having them somewhere really obvious like your neck or your hand unappealing. I think women and men with neck and face tattoos remind me or criminals or gang members. Some people really love getting them and are almost addicted to them. I have a friend who is a tattoo artist and some of her work is really cool but some of it is too gothic for me. I think having one or two that really mean something or are unique can be cool but a lot of them are just boring or clichéd.
My husband has one tattoo which I think is fine but I never got one, though Ive thought about it. I am really fickle when it comes to fashion and Im pretty sure Id get tired of it sooner or later. I feel Im more "special" these days because Im NOT inked. Also my father in law just got one of a German Shepherd head-??!!--on his arm . Seriously.

Personally, tattoos on girls are a turn off for me in most cases which doesn't imply that I think poorly of them or look down on people having tattoos...

It is their choice and I do not really judge people on trivial things like that...

Tattoos on guys seem more appealing to me anyway, not sexually... well yes, sexually too... hard to explain...

I wouldn't really mind a girl with small tattoos and there are few exceptions of tattoos I'd even enjoy on a girl like i.e. Angel wings on her back, a paw etc.

They aren't for me, but I do like the ones that have cultural and sometimes religious significance like Buddhist tattoos or Hebrew themed tattoos.

I Do get tired of seeing cliche tattoos or people getting tattoos for unwise decisions. Tattoos have lost their taboo and toughness for the most part.

I don't question the sexuality of people with tattoos in general. I'd only question it if the tattoo gave me reason to. For example: Female has a tattoo of a pinup girl. Male has a tattoo of something effeminate or has a homoerotic tattoo or even he has a tattoo of a penis.

Its an art and its the way to express yourself. Like people who suffered depression and have a tattooed bracelet on her hands just to hide the scars on her wrist due to cutting. A tattooed face of a love one in a person's body just to show his love for her. A cross on her hand to show shes a believer. A 3D spider on his arm to overcome his fear. A cheetah on his feet to show hes a runner and an athlete. A lion in his body to express hes strong and brave personality. Not all people having tattooes are addict, alcoholic, badass and a rebel, some of them just wanted to express themselves through art. There are story behind every tattooes you see.

I like them a lot. I realise that some tattoos are becoming increasingly conventional now, but even a mildly radical form of self-expression is something I like to see.

As for the look of tattoos, I don't mind either way so long as they're not *extremely* gaudy or tasteless. Even sloppy, spontaneous, ill-conceived tattoos can have a charm about them. Some meaning and expression is good, even if it's not cryptic.

I've never really thought of myself as a tattoo person, but I might get one one day. Who knows?

Although I do find some tattoos to be aesthetically pleasing, I do not believe that is a good reason for me to get a one.

I don't like tattoos which are referential, quotes, indicative of your interests, names, faces, etc. You shouldn't use your body as a profile page. Why not just talk to people about your interests, socio-political leanings, and beliefs?

As a purveyor of art I don't believe anything you explicitly tell a person to put on your skin is art. It is a craft. Craftsmanship is concerned with the physical skill it takes to create a piece. Whereas art is concerned with the thought behind the craft, the meaning. The only way I could justify getting a tattoo is if I go to a tattoo artist, whose work I love, and give them carte blanche. That way I will be wearing a unique artwork whose meaning, even to its wearer, will change over time.

Although I do not believe tattoos are unattractive, I do consider them indicative of the mind which bears them.
