Your opinion on rap music?

In my own opinion, rap is one of the lowest, most horrific categories of music. It is - on every level - tasteless, rotten, crude, loud, pointless, brainless and VERY irritating.

But what do you think? Your opinion on rap?

It's talentless, irritating, noisy and filthy! 59
I hate rap, but on occasion it's okay 44
I neither love nor hate rap - I'm neutral. 25
I like rap. 32

depends on what you mean by rap, usually people get Hip Hop confused with rap. Dumb songs like black and yellow are hip hop songs. But Tupac, Immortal technique, Zro all have meaning in most of their songs that are deep.

  • I only like a few rap songs but only the ones that have meaning. The rest of rap are usualy rappers just trying to show that they are hardcore when in reality they arent.

Many people think that rap is stupid because they've only been exposed to mainstream rap, which I admit, is garbage. (Lil Wayne, Drake, etc.)

There is good and bad in every music genre.

I have found that there are many underground rappers that are very talented (sometimes more poets than musicians)

It's wrong to condemn an entire genre when you haven't heard all of it. My belief is that if if there had never been any good rap created, it would never have become big enough to evolve into the mainstream and popular thing that it is now.

  • Many people say they hate hip hop/rap because the only part of that genre they know, is monotonous mainstream versions of it. Listen to some REAL hip hop, understand what it's truly about, then offer your opinion.

I'm in my 20's and I like old school rap 80's-late 90's and some of the early 2000-2005. It's getting really weak now. No message, no heart, all about the $ and studio sound. No raw talent anymore.

I agree 80s and 90s was the strong point of rap

i think rap is okay. i'm not that into it so i'm not so knowledgeable in the variety of artists, styles, etc. but i was very amused seeing dumbfoundead on grindtime and now i like listening to his songs on "fun with dumb" eminem is good too...i also feel that mainstream rap is mainly good for clubbing, but oldschool rap and underground rap is more interesting.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion. And I can agree with some of what you post, but one could argue the same to be true of many musicians. However a lot of rap songs are deeply political and only pointless if you missed the point.

You should check out the NPR article on this genre.

One of my favorite artists is Deltron. He has a way with words.

"Global controls will have to be imposed
And a world governing body, will be created to enforce them.
    Crises, precipitate change.."

I like rap, but there are too many wannabes now. Eminem & Jay Z are practically the only good rappers. Also girls fail at rapping - and I hate to admit that but it's true.

  • I can't stand rap personally, as soon as it comes on I have to block my ears or turn on my mp3 player

Wow. People on IIN generalizing rap.
Honestly its painful to see rap get suck a bad "rap". (pun intended)

Regardless of the sometimes crude subject matter, rap is poetry, its an art form and a way for one to express themselves, maybe even tell a story of past struggles in a unique artistic way.

Its not all "money, hoes, clothes", but sadly some people just refuse to see that because they base A whole GENRE off a few select lines of a few songs they hear on the radio, or otherwise.

I wish I could personally open every individuals eyes to the beauty that I see in rap, unfortunately that's not possible, nor are people willing to approach rap with an open mind, instead they go in head first looking for stuff NOT to like about it.

Its ok though. A wise rapper once said, "Those who don't get it, ain't supposed too"

Rap is cool. Don't care much for the cuss words, but the songs are awesome.

so much of it sucks, but a small portion of it is some of the best music every created. Music is all about emotion and passion and rap allows this to be exploited with ease. rap can be actually quite educational too (lupe fiasco, akala)

rap sucks it's nothing some dumbass talking about how much money he has and how beats women with some music maded by a computher it's talentless and stupid crap metal is better because it actully has talent and plays real interments like guitar bass drums and the singer is really singing its not all about making money like rap metal is really about the music

I only like it when it's top notch. Best there is. Also it should have meaningful lyrics, like 95% of the stuff nowadays is meaningless stupid gibberish...

I don't like rap. Honestly, I wouldn't even call it music. But a lot of people do like it. And I try to be respectful to their taste in music. But it's really hard to do. Especially when some people turn it up so loud that your eardrums burst. And rap is pretty much the only music people turn up that loud. That's when it evolves from a tolerance into an annoyance.

It's largely talentless and meaningless, as shown by how quickly it's forgotten. What everybody is bumping and think is so hot one day is considered completely stupid the next. There are VERY few long-lasting rap artists, most have one popular song or one album and that's it. And some have a few albums but just fizzle out, and god forbid you listen to an old (and by old I mean as little as a month ago) album....OMG you're WACK!! Nowadays rap is at least 70% made strictly for strippers to play at work anyway.

As with any music genre, it depends what the artist is talking about and who's listening. if a gang member is listening to a song about shooting cops, not so good. If an impoverished kid is listening to a song about overcoming one's circumstances, that's great.

I used to like it but now I dislike it immensely.

I understand it's a product of society, but its a bit confusing to me why its so popular. I wish it wasn't mainstream but that's not my choice.

Just keep it all away from me. Bury it, stuff it, throw it out to sea, just keep all yo bitchen away from me!
