Yes ma'am no ma'am

Sometimes when my girlfriend asks me a question or wants me to do something, I respond with "Yes ma'am" or "No ma'am". She says when I do that she feels like she's bossing me around and doesn't like it. I don't mean to respond that way, I don't even talk to my own mother like that.

is it normal for this to happen? Can anyone else relate, or even have something similar? Comments are greatly appreciated.

Completely normal! I always answer my husband with a yes sir or no sir. I think he likes the respect and is so used to hearing it that when I don't say it he looks at me funny :) I love that man

I'm originally from the Deep South where people say ma'am and sir all the time; it's part of our culture, and a respect thing. If you're not being sassy about it I think your girlfriend needs to get over it. Then again some people like it sassy, ain't nuthin wrong with that if you like it.

My boyfriend sometimes says that. But it's just a cultural thing. I think nothing of it, it's just how he is.
