Writing songs about suicide... as an adult?

I understand that young people and teenagers often have feelings is dispair and may suffer severe depression, even sometimes wishing to end their own life. I am 25 years old and I regularly get these feelings myself, so I write music about it.

When I'm writing it often I get the thought in my mind that I'm no different to a teenager who writes maudlin poetry in their darkened bedroom whilst listening to the latest popular "unpopular" emo band and cutting themselves with the point end of a pair of compasses.

But I'm 25. Is it normal for a married 25 year old homeowner to behave like a teenage emo in this way?

It's normal. "emos" aren't the only ones who get suicidal or depressed. Allot of my poems have the subject of suicide in them and I'm not a emo. Sylvia Plath was a poet and a writer who committed suicide in the 60's. She wasn't a emo.

you are confusing real problems (yours)...

with fake "emo" kid problems.. they are just for the attention, your issues run deeper.

relax and write whatever the hell you want!

Yes. Music is about expressing one's self. Song lyrics don't have to be literal. Music is about amplifying your thoughts, making the world hear it. It's not uncommon to exaggerate your lyrics. Just because your lyrics are about suicide, doesn't mean you have a problem. You're just expressing yourself.

Totally normal, and SOOOOO many people struggle with the same thing, myself included.

Try talking to a counselor/therapist. It helped me sort out some stuff.

Also, I'd HIGHLY recommend volunteering in some fashion because honestly, it really puts things in perspective for you, plus it just makes you feel good.

Another idea, if you are a person of faith, is to seek a church/temple/synagogue/mosque. Community is important to have and I know that my tendency is to want to be a hermit, which only makes me feel like crap and speak negatively to myself and to have several people around me somewhat regularly has been helpful.

Best of luck to you and I encourage the song writing. It's a great therapeutic way of getting feelings out on paper. I prefer it much more than journaling!

  • You really should talk to a mental health professional.

  • I have a song called "White rabbit" on http://www.myspace.com/mawkish1983 that I wrote when I was depressed. It's about my desire for escape (by any means, including suicide).

You don't have to be a teenager to be depressed. It doesn't matter if you're 8 or 80 - the black dog can still find you.

Writing songs is an excellent way to express yourself, so keep going.

I know how you feel. I'm a married 28 year old home owner, and I often get suicidal thoughts and write about them and so on. I think it's because we constantly want more in life, and when we can't get it, we get really depressed. I dunno, just my thoughts. But don't worry, you're not alone! :)

well, as long as you don't commit suicide yourself.

i mean writing about it is normal... writing about anything is normal it's a way to express emotions and just let them go ;)

I think it's normal but not desirable. Try therapy?

Suicidal thoughts aren't reserved to emos.
