Writing novels at age 9 - is this prodigious or just normal?

My friends and family have always said I have a knack for writing. I started writing novels at the age of 9 and produced a 300+-page work at age 12. I also wrote 2 others - a 486-page novel at age 13 and another one at age 14. I even planned a 12-book series at age 15 but didn't finish the first book. I wanted to be a published author way before my teens but unfortunately I procrastinated and the business of high school wiped that dream away. My first novel was about a prophecy among talking eagles and I utilized a lot of zoology - such as eagle behaviour, how they hunt, mating dances etc. They also had their own culture, their own language, and stories. The writing style was similar to, say, David Clement Davies and his books "The Sight" and "Fire Bringer". Since I know for sure that close people will be biased about my abilities, I'm just wondering whether I'd be considered a "genius" or just "a little better".

    you sound kind of full or yourself, thats cool that you write so much and find enjoyment in it, but its obvious you only posted this to get replies like "OMG YOURE GIFTED I WANNA READ YOUR AMAZING EAGLE BOOK!"for a little confidence boost.
    this is compliment trap if ive ever seen one.

      Well I'm sorry if I sounded so full of myself - it was never my intention. I just wanted to know. Honestly, I don't care how good I am or how bad I am. I daresay that I am a rather humble person, but I get a lot of comments like the one you said above, and all I want to know is "am I normal". That's all. Well, probably this site isn't the best place to ask this since I cannot post my work and that would be my mistake.

    Since Ive never read your work and therefore cant determine how good the it actually is, then I cant really answer. Just because you can write 300+ pages endlessly doesnt mean its any good. To be young and writing is fairly normal though it probably means you have a better ability at writing than others. You also have a knack fo researching too. Also what I always try to remind myself and what you should too is that no matter how good you think you might be there is probably someone out there who is better so always push forward and try to better yourself in your skill. If you are truly interested in writing, then humbly go about working on it and you might end up succesful. Are you full of yourself like others are implying? Maybe. So to answer simply to your question, yes it is normal to write novels at a young age, though its not the age that matters, its the quality of the work. I used to write and illustrate books at the age of 5, but have long given up on it, but you shouldnt.

    dude, any little kid can write a novel.

    try writing a GOOD one, though.

  • Sorry, I couldn't understand that. I feel it may have been muffled due to the depth of your head in your rectal passage.

    It would be best for all if you ceased to exist.

    I would also wager that the books were shit. Like, really shit.

    Depends on a lot of things. Simply writing a lot of stories at a young age may not be what every kid does, but don't be so quick to say
    normal behavior->normal intellect
    and
    not normal behavior->genius intellect
    And even if you wrote really great stories, maybe you're only really good at writing stories, which would necessarily make you a genius. Either way, determining whether or not you are a genius is pretty pointless in the grand scheme of things.

    Haha no offense but that's a pretty conceited question. Writing books is definitely something not a lot of people do, but whether or not you'd be considered a genius depends on whether or not the books are actually good.

    While you're on the idea of eagles communicating with each other, you should probably consider incorporating some Native American folklore into the story. The bald eagle to their culture was regarded as a legendary symbol.

    Hiya,

    Lots of people can make up stories but not everyone does/wants to.

    I made up short stories/poems from a very young age. Every time something happens that I want to remember I put it in a story or little poem.

    I think it was because I was brought up on songs with stories behind them, all of which I still luv today. I used to be embarrassed but it took more effort NOT to do it!

    None of us could possibly determine whether you are a prodigy or not because we haven't read what you wrote. With enough dedication, anyone can write a novel, even a child of 9 years old. Whether the novel is a great read is what would make you a prodigy. That isn't normal behavior, and I'm positive that you already knew that it wasn't normal before you even posted, but just because it isn't normal doesn't make you a prodigy.

    your work eithic is unormal but yes having Novel ideas (heh heh)at nine and above is pretty normal. they used to make us write little stories in first grade and mine were always 'To be continued' I had a huge thing planned out for it! I killed of my crush just so i could preform CPR to get a kiss X3 what a naughty little girl I was! but i left it alone. Im way to lazy to write. It stays in my head for me alone.

  • good for u. i need some motivation to finish my graphic novel.... :]

  • you should be proud that your so talented. I want to be a writer but i never finish my stories. I can never find the time, if i had time, i would write a good novel but i don't. :(
    You should ignore all those people who put you down because you truly are talented, and you should never let anyone ever take that away from you :)

  • I'm curious: do you read a lot? Because most of the time people who read a lot are good writers. I'd have to read the stories to know if they're any good, but I will say that you are very motivated, so good for you.

    I think your pretty normal... maybe a little full of yourself, but normal all in all. I started drawing when i was a little girl, and everybody seems to think im really good at it, but to be honest i think that im not good at all. I think that im only good at shading which for some reason makes people think that the overall drawing is good :/ but i really enjoy drawing and i couldnt live without it...

    When I was younger (10) we were assigned to write mystery stories. I was in 5th grade, and I was the only one who got an A+ 100%. My language arts teacher said that it was the best mystery story she ever saw in years. She also said I had a reading level higher than 8th grade according to tests. So I may just share some similarities with you :D. I love to write and I still love to write my own stories and novels (they're definitely not as long as what you had said you did, though!)

    I hate to sound mean but...lots of people can write novels, even at very young ages. I myself had a book published and it was during this publishing process that I fully realized how many talented people there are out there, trying to get their works recognized and appreciated. I was pretty much listed with tons of others just to find an agent and my particular publishing company in the first place! --Lots of very imaginative and 'genius' like people. Also, don't let anything wipe your dream away, it's too important.

    You sound very full of yourself, get an English teacher or someone equally qualified in the publishing and literacy industry. Some of us are just naturally good at writing.

  • Well - how do you consider yourself is really the question. No?

    And whatever you decide in that regard, don't let high school dumb you down.

    It sounds like you have an obsession with mapping out your thoughts onto paper. Sorry, but your delusions of communicating with eagles are by no means a stroke of genius. In fact, they probably depict something much less than that.
