sometimes when i stare at a light and then close my eyes, i see waves of colors. like ripples off the top layer of pond water. awesome. or if i get something in my eye and rub it, i get a checker board effect. then i open my eyes and i can still see the checker board for like 5 seconds!

They're called phosephenes, they're sort of like little light shows when you close your eyes. Sometimes I like to look at a light for a second, close my eyes and then I see my phosephenes in lines moving, almost like they're dancing and they really look 3-Dimensional. :D

Yup, those "spots" are called phosphenes. I don't feel like going into the scientific description of the phenomenon, haha. Just don't poke yourself in the eye.

I used to do that quite often when I was a kid. I would be trying to go to sleep, not tired at all, so I would get bored and start playing around with my eyes and such, lol...

It's called a pressure phosphene. Phosphenes are a visual phenomenon.

I think it's normal, pressure on the eyeball can cause some odd effects. I have had this.
