Would you want to live forever?

Lets say they had a new formula which let you live forever. Would you take this? Would you be willing to live forever? Do you want to die a timely death? Some of you would say you want to stay mortal. Some would want to live forever since you fear death. Some of you would only live forever with certien conditions like your parents stayed with you or a lover or your friend or whatever. If you pick the third choice please explain your conditions.

Yes. As long as I stayed young and had the option to die whenever I wanted to.

      This.
My biggest worry when it comes to time is my youth and fertility. If I didn't have to worry about how long I could wait until it's impossible or horribly difficult to have kids and I could take my time for college and my career then I'd be set. After I've done everything I want to do and seen everything I want to see, I'd like to have the option to check out of this world.

No, because I think you will eventually really get bored of life.

I would live forever, as long as I maintained my youth (I wouldn't want to gradually melt into a wrinkly sack of skin and hair with some organs underneath).

Also as long as I could kill myself if it all got too much.

As much as the trauma of losing everyone I love would be upsetting (presuming they don't live forever too), I think eventually I'd come to terms with it philosophically. I mean, imagine all the incredible people you would get to meet that you otherwise would never have done? Imagine all the amazing experiences and opportunities that would never have arisen in your ordinary life-time? Imagine how much you could LEARN? The wisdom would be beautiful.

Sometimes I think I would like to have one more life, just as a "do-over" for all the mistakes I've made in this one, but I would not want to live forever. Eventually that would get boring.

I think I'd get tired of living after a while. Age gracefully and go out in peace.

I believe that if someone wants to be immortal they haven't thought it through. If you answered no then it shows you've at least given it some thought.

It isn't an issue of morality; it's an issue of personal choice. I don't see what is immoral about wanting to live forever.

I also don't see how voting "no" shows you have thought about it any more than voting "yes" does. "Yes" isn't the answer people necessarily default to. You shouldn't presume that just because people don't agree with you they might not have thought it through properly.

Once we get past the superficial idea of living forever what is the benefit to not dying?

Did you mean immortality? I didn't mention morality

            • What is superficial about wanting to live forever. All creatures are driven to try and survive. Wanting to die and choosing to die is something not many creatures can choose.

Are you saying that wanting to survive is less human of us? Why we created doctors for the survival of humanity. In a way its all just a way to survive. Wanting to die is one of the most unnatural things in the world.

It is like saying humans are bad for having a sex drive or for wanting to eat. Now who that sex drive is directed at is debatable but having one is not this unnatural thing.

Some things we have to deal with. Like the simple curse of eating food. Unlike plants we can not produce our own. Though at the same we are not being munched on. So maybe we got the better end of the stick on this one.

Oh, sorry :P You're quite right, I misread "immortality" as "immorality". Forget I mentioned that.

I don't think the benefits of living forever are superficial at all. Just read disthing's comment. You could learn so much, and have so much wisdom and experience. Think of all the millions of people you could help with that knowledge and wisdom, even if it was at the cost of your own happiness (which I don't believe it necessarily would be). Nothing superficial about that.

But apart from those benefits of staying alive, I have a biological drive to not die. Death is very scary and I don't believe there is anything on the other side. It's permanent. If I didn't see any benefits to not dying I'd probably kill myself, but it seems very obvious to me that there are many benefits.

Live to be old, happy, and healthy, yes. To live forever, no. Conditions that may make me willing would be to make my loved ones immortal. Living in each era would be tiring, with all the ups and downs and seeing others go by. I would disintegrate physically and mentally.

My mother passed away when I was 10. I had an estranged father who passed away when I was about 22. I'm not very close to my family and I have no friends. I now have symptoms of abdominal cancer (I hope it's only a false alarm) and death terrifies me. I wouldn't say I've been a perfect person either and my relationship with God has been tenuous at best. I do, however, have a husband who loves me (even though he's not exactly Don Juan) and cares about me very much so I am blessed.

Absolutely no. Outliving all of my family and friends, seeing the extinction of humans and the evolution into new creatures, plus I wouldn't remember a thing from my life after a while and get really bored with living.

I'd live forever, it's better living and doing so many things, travel, family, friends ect then dieing and doing absoloutly nothing at all you can't think, move. But maybe dieing is like when we weren't born, nobody no's what we were doing when we were unborn so maybe that's the feeling will get when we die. Also if everyone choose the option to live forever, others getting born into the world, which means It would be over populated and cramped.

I'd get over the people. I wouldn't want to live forever because eventually I would get trapped somewhere, forever. And what would happen if the Earth was destroyed somehow? I'd like to live a long time, though. But not forever.

Maybe. I wouldn't mind outliving my family because I fucking hate them but I'd be sad for outliving my best friends. But I really want to see the future it could be interesting and I could also visit countries I've always wanted to but never had time to do so.

    1. Living forever?... Would make you insane one day or another?.. LOCKED up FOREVER?

    2. After trying possibly everything there was to try here on earth, whats next?... Oh wait, just because i would live forever doesn't mean i get everything in the world right?.. Even more no.

    3. Unless i could become some future super space exploration guy.. Well, still no.

Too many people hate themselves to want eternal life. I want to live forever, in God's Heaven. There is more than this, I am 100% positive. Death is not natural, it
    is a curse.

Yeah, because I want to be young and immortal forever and could die when ever I want to. It's not that I fear death, I could murder myself anytime. What's the point of death if you could live forever and choose to die at anytime? I would want to learn how the universe began as to what we now call "living" and "death". What comes after what we now call "death"? Hell nor Heaven, none is real.

I would want to live as long as the quality of my life is free from a chronic, incurable, painful disease. Life without pain is wonderful. A painful protracted life without hope of improvement is not a value to be had.

Life is the ultimate value for which we do anything worthy from the second we wake up in the morning. If we can continue being creative, productive, curious about what is out there in the universe, there isn't enough time in man's life to do it all, no matter how long it takes. If genetic engineering can replace diseased organs with brand new ones, I would want to live as long as I am interested in learning and discovering about this amazing biological phenomenon of the universe which we call "life."

    Yes.

I want to live history. Not just a lifetime of it, but the entire duration of mankind. I love the history and accomplishments of humans, and I would do anything to see everything that has and will ever happen to the race.

But only if I could be a mega-action-super-turbo-laser-destructo-mecha-bot.
