Would you take the money?

You're low on money, won't get money into your account for a few more weeks and you're wondering how you're going to eat, let's say hypothetically borrowing money isn't an option,

You go for a late night walk and cutting through a secluded path on the outskirts of a local park you see a wallet, it has 150 pounds/dollars or regional equivalent in it, however it also has the person's id, cards and photos all the usual things you'd expect in it. Do you take the money?

I'm in a situation where I can't afford food, my own reckless fault though, I eat maybe every other day, even then it's one bowl of rice mixed with soup, some times it's 3 days without food, and despite the fact that it's a short term problem I decided that if this were to happen to me I'd have absolutely no problem taking the money, I think I'd go to the address and put the wallet through so the cards are safe etc, but I'd take the money without hesitation, iin? And what would you do ?

I was in almost exactly the same situation last year when I was really broke and found a wallet with about $100 in it. From the cards it was clear the person was quite well off so I decided it was ok to keep the money.

Then I realised how guilty I'd feel spending it money so I located the person and he came and collected it and gave me a $50 reward.

Not long afterwards I found a $50 on the floor of a local shop which I thought I'd dropped, then realised later it was someone else's. I checked with the shop owner if anyone had reported it lost and no-one had so I kept it.

I've lost wallets 4 times in my life: two were returned intact, one was returned without the money and the fourth was never returned.

I would think someone would suspend their luxuries to leave more money for food and survival but that is just my opinion , you're the expert . Thank you for sharing this kind yet insightful information .

        warm regards

I'm usually low on money. I don't have a bank account or credit cards to fall back on but there's no way I would take that money. If it was just cash on the ground then I would snatch it up real quick but not if it's in someone's wallet. I would look at the ID and try to find the person. I have lost my wallet once before and while there wasn't much money in it or credit/debit cards, it's a shitty feeling.

Eat potatoes and beans. They're balanced and cheap.

Getting that money would only last a short while, right thing to do would be to give him the money with the wallet. Maybe it will pay off, who knows. But I would definitely feel better about doing it.

I would return the wallet to it's rightful owner intact, because that's what I would want someone to for for me.

Also I know some churches in town that have food pantries. I don't have a lot of money myself either, but it's no excuse to take what isn't mine.

I've encountered this a few times and I returned the wallet with the cash intact each time. Strange thing is, even though I needed the cash each time, I just didn't care to take it. I didn't even care for driving to the peoples house to return it nor did I care about how sad the people felt without the wallet, yet I returned it anyway. I have no idea why I retuned them. Lol

I would get the wallet and money back to the person who lost it. Perhaps they are worse off than you are. You might be in a similar situation in the future and you would be grateful if someone helped you out. Like the other comment, if it was just the money sitting there, it would be in my pocket in a flash.

  • I would be very tempted to take the money but at the end of the day I would return it. If I took it I would feel so guilty and 150 dollars isn't worth it.

I would contact the person who lost their wallet and make arrangements to return it. When we got together I would tell the person how hard up I am financially and tell them that a finders fee/reward would be greatly appreciated, and hope fir the best!

Oops. It was a woman's wallet and she is into butt stuff. She had stuffed the wallet into her butt but due to constantly doing butt stuff, it fell right the hell out of there and she was unawares and doesn't wear underwears.

Honestly I'd take the money regardless of my financial situation then I would return the wallet.

I was in a similar situation once while I was on vacation with my family. I went for a drunk walk on the beach late at night. Tripped on a purse right on the waters edge found three hundred dollars. Took the money and turned the purse in the hotel lobby. If I didn't find it the purse would have been washed away and they would have lost a lot more then just the money.

    This happened to me once.

I found a wallet with money in, cards and identification.

I went out of my way to return it all intact to the person. That person immediately counted his money and told me 200 is missing and he wants it. I didn't touch any of his shit and he was obviously taking chances at my expense. So I punched him on that ball thing on his throat and walked away.

How about you borrow the money and when you get your money in a couple of weeks return it,and then find the owner.

If I could tell the person was well off and I was at the point where I couldn't eat every day, I'd take the money but return the cards. I'd probably have to say the money was already gone, but the person should be happy to get the cards back.

It's basic human preservation, I'd need the money for food. Not for extra things, like games.

Even if you don't have money, you have to maintain your integrity. Without integrity, you really do have nothing.

I was standing behind a guy in line at Target a few years ago, when a wad of bills fell out of the jacket he was carrying. I couldn't tell exactly how much was in the stack, but the bill on the outside was a C-note. He had already walked around the edge of the checkout stand to grab his merchandise and had no idea he'd dropped the cash.

Although I'd been unemployed for nearly a year, and was getting down to the last of my savings, keeping that money never even crossed my mind. I picked it up, and had to call after the guy who'd dropped it because he was already walking away. As he took the money back, he actually asked me why I hadn't just pocketed it. When I explained that it was because it wasn't mine, he offered to pay for my purchase (which was less than $40) and I graciously accepted.

As we walked out of the store, he asked what I did for a living. When I told him that I was currently unemployed, he explained that he owned a number of different businesses and was sure that he could find something for someone like me. Nearly four years later, I am still grateful to him, and I now run one of his businesses.

If I'm flat broke, I'd take the money.
If I got a job and an income, I'd return everything untouched.

Let's hope I never have to take money from some wallet I found...

I would return the wallet anonymously without the cash. Then, I would mail the cash so it arrives safely. Btw, I have much more money than I need.

This is a tricky situation for me because I am in the hard spot without resources to feed myself but also the persons I.D is all there making it easy to return . I think I would just use soup kitchens and food banks etc. but let's say that's for some reason no possible either , I would do one of two things .. I would keep the money , mail the wallet and pay it back when I could to that persons address or search the name OR I would just give the money back and hope karma came back around for me . I think either one is fine and if I was starving to death , I don't think the person would mind I kept it and then paid it back especially once I explain why . There is the dilemma of not knowing their situation but anyone who keeps 150 + for pocket cash , more than likely isn't out on the streets and not keeping track of their wallet .

Walking around with $150 and you lose it? I would keep it anyway. It's different if you stole it, but they just left it there? Yeah keep the money. You can always just drop the rest off at the post office and they're return it.
