  • My memories and experiences shaped me into the person I am today. Erasing my memories would be metaphorical suicide.

What a good question, I hate the thought of losing my memories, it's my worst fear.

I'd have to lose my old memories, since I'm young and if I can't remember anything in the future, then to me I might as well be dead. There's no point in living if you can't remember it.

Ahhh, I hate anything memory related, it scares meD:

Best question on IIN for a while! It's such a good question that I'm struggling to answer it. I'll think about it on my walk to work.

Best question for a long time. Thinking about memory gives me existential anxiety.

I just went to a new story 'is it normal to have similar dream bla bla' and Amy&kaleigh and kaliegh&amy were replying back and forth to each other, I mean herselves. I'm so confused however, neither of them posted the poll about the girl who lies for attention. I'm gonna need a bigger accordian file folder thingy!

Good detective work, Miss Wompus. The mystery deepens! I think we're going to need a whole underground storage facility before this one is over!

  • Ooooh instead of leaving it as 'other' I like how you worded it. < That has nothing to do with the poll and to be quite frank I have NO idea which one I'd choose so I'm going to be lame and select neither.

  • I read about a case of a man with Anterograde amnesia (cant form new memories). He was literally stuck in time, unable to progress forward. It was probably one of the saddest things I've ever read.

The case was about a wife taking her husband, who had Anterograde amnesia, to the psychiatric facility to further his treatment. The husband would ask his wife where she was taking him but the wife didn't say anything during the whole trip. When they arrived at the facility, the staff took him away forcefully into a room. The husband was confused and cried for his wife to save him but the wife, unable to see her husband going through this, got in the car and left. Periodically his kids would visit him at the facility and the husband would notice that they look a lot older than he remembered. Some years passed, the kids matured into adults and they still payed their father a visit. However, during one visit, the father stopped recognizing his own children altogether because they have became adults. Soon the children became nothing to the father because of his anterograde amnesia; he still believed they were kids because that's all he remembered. At the end of the case, it said that his family stopped visiting him because they didn't exist to him anymore.

So, in a nutshell, I would go with Retrograde amnesia (loss of old memories) because I don't want to be stuck in time.

I have old memories that are very precious to me, so I would want to keep them.

I have some memories that I'd love to lose.
I'd hate to be unable to ever learn anything again, though. I don't have enough happy memories to sacrifice that.

Isn't I would want to make new ones the same as I would rather lose all of my old ones?

I'd rather keep my old ones.

It depends what my old memories were.. If I was really happy with what had happened so far then I would want my old ones if my life sucked.. I would want to forget it all but as for my answer I think I would want to keep all my old ones I would just bring a camera with me everywhere I go from then on lol.

Would the first of the new memories count as early memories? kind of like when you're really young and you learn things that are embedded within you for life.

Lose my old ones. Ever hear of anterograde amnesia? It's awful. Check out The Man With The 7 Second Memory sometime.

I think the ability to make new ones would be okay, because people you know could tell you about your past perhaps. Also I believe that with making new ones, you would have not lost the future in a sense, and you could continue to make memories and do new things, learn new things, and reshape your world where with just the past, you'd be somewhat stuck.

When you put it that way, I agree. I would much rather be able to move on then be stuck .

i cant imagine how terrible it would be for me to loose all my old memories... my childhood was so happy. it would be so bad to just not know what your past was like too.

Actually, come to think of it, it depends on the type of memory-loss you're talking about. I'll assume that you mean personal "declarative" memories as opposed to skills like language and motor functions.

In that case, considering I'm under 40, I'd have to lose all my old memories. On an emotional level (on which everyone seems to be voting) it would be incredibly difficult to choose, but it just makes sense. Not to mention, we have physical documentation of the past that could still be somewhat appreciated once we become re-familiarized with our loved ones. That wouldn't be possible if we couldn't create new memories.

So basically, choosing your old memories would be stupid, unless you're over 40 or have already lost a significant loved one.

I would want to maintain all of the connections that I already made. I think that giving up tomorrow for the sake of those that love us would be more important.

The idea of losing the bond I have with my daughter frightens me. The new me would not be the person that I am now, and there is no way of knowing how strong the new connection with her would be.

Ah, I understand what you mean. I don't know what I would do If I lost my bond that I have with my mother right now.
