Would you rather go to the past or the future?

Say a supernatural being gives you the choice of either going to the past or the future for 24 hours. During those 24 hours, you will be a floating ghost that will not be able to interfere with the environment you wish to explore; it is strictly for observation purposes only. On top of being invisible and invincible, you can also instantly teleport anywhere in the world (other countries, deep sea, high mountains, etc).

So given the choice and the conditions during the visit, would you go to the past or the future? Also, feel free to comment on what you think you'll be observing during your visit to the past or the future. What do you want to see and why? Would you go back in time to see major historical events or would you rather go to the immediate future and see the answers to your final exam questions? Any reason will do, I'm just curious :)

Neither. I have no interest in time traveling. 12

  • The future for those winning lottery ticket numbers, or the cure for cancer

I can relive the past by reading a history book

You could also go to the past for the secret of Atlantis, or the final resting place of some long-forgotten pharaoh for money. Or rediscover the secret of greek lime-fire.

But I'd probably choose the future as well. Lottery is an easier way to earn money, and without being able to interact with the environment, the future holds more possibilities.

If there were no consequences when going to the past (aka. step on a butterfly, kill a thousand people) I would want to go.
First stop, Ancient Egypt. To see how the pyramids were built. It kills me that we don't know for sure how they were constructed...

I like to be suprised. I would rather go to the past. See if ancient aliens is on to something or not. The future will come. The past, never again.

I agree. We may not live to see it, but the future is coming to us. The past can be lost in history and therefore more mysterious than the arriving future. I'd love to go back to the Biblical era, so I'd be able to answer questions about the meaning of life etc, according to holy books (The Bible, Torah, etc)

Absolutely. So many different views and religions, most all share similar beliefs or patterns. I would really like to know what had actually happened to be so large and to be misinterpreted in so many ways. It's really interesting to me. It's nice to see that at least one other is as interested :)

I'd have to say the past. I'd go as far back as the Jurassic times! It would be amazing to see the dinosaurs alive and if they look any different than how we picture them. Plus, I wouldn't have to worry about being eaten!
If I could choose a second time-era I'd choose the medieval times.

    Past. Why?
    1. I would love to see major historical events, different cultures and to correct the missunderstandings that the history books have
    2. I would want to have a look at what my family and my friends (observation)

Why not future? Because then you'd lose all the excitement!

My first reaction would be the future, for a lot of the same reasons already given. Curiosity, the chance to see what your ex looks like in ten years, to see what your son does with his life. And those winning lotery numbers. But NO. The best thing I could do is to go back in time and MEET JESUS. I think I would pick the day he raised lazerous from the dead.

The future. To see what will happen to me, so I can know what to change and what not to do.
Yeah, and win the lottery, see the answers to exams, see who I will be when I'm like 40-50.

I wouldn't choose past because I can't change what happens, If I could, I would probably choose past :D

Jesus, why is everyone obsessed with the lottery? It would be much smarter to come back from the future to make some good stock trades. As if that would make you happy anyway.

This is a good question though. I'm leaning towards the future but I'm not sure why - it sounds more practical and more exciting.

Because of the reason that my past could not be affected by re-visiting it, I would choose the future.

Wait wait wait, not the future nor the past. I would want to go for a parallel present. In which things would not be so shitty.

    Comment Hidden ( show )
  • Dozis

    I'd go both ways.
First in the past to change events then in the future to check if I got it right.
Then probably back again to fix the events sole more, so I would forget Bout the present and only exist in the past and in the future. I would completely forget about the present. But being tome travel something that is only possible whenever you get trapped into a time space paradox loop, i would not be capable of deciding where and when to land. For twenty four hours. Mhm. What is the worse place of the past you can imagine? Well that is where I would go.
So when this jackass bouncez me back in the shitty present I am living at least it is gonna feel less shitty compared to the shitty past He gave me the chance ofiving in for, twentyfourhours.
Damn I hate you people so much.

I'd love to go to the future, say maybe 500 years from now, but I fear what I may see. It could be us still with the same problems we've always had. Or it could just be the remnants of our civilization on Earth, due to some sort majorly destructive event. On the other hand, it might be us as a successful space faring race. Being able to colonize places outside of Earth. Then again, we may just be trying to kill eachother off on a much larger scale than before. Given the choice I'd go to the future, the curiosity of what is to come for our race is something I've always had.

  • Forgot to mention that you can only pick one specific date. For example, if you are going to the past, you can spend your 24 hours at 12/31/1222 or 12/15/1988 but not both. I know there's a lot of details but I'm looking forward to your guy's comments!
