Would you marry someone with different political views than you?

I saw a story on Yahoo that dealt with a married couple that have been married for 25 years and the husband is conservative while the wife is liberal. They said they can manage, but I wonder what the rest of is it normal thinks.
Would you marry someone with different political views than you?

Yes. Love is love no matter their political affiliation. 64
No. I'll never marry a liberal or conservative. 32
Undecided. 24

The only polital view we have to agree on is that politicians are full of shit, and that they aren't going to save us.

No way I can be with a girl who believes in high income tax, progressive tax rates, taxing dividends and capital gains, taxing financial transactions and heck maybe taxing my farts even.

How different? If they were ultra-conservative or communist sort of difference from me, I definitely couldn't deal with it. If they leaned a little to the right, or a little more than me to the left, I wouldn't mind at all.

I think more important that the degree of difference is the tolerance of the person I'm with. I like to think of myself as a fairly tolerant person, and I could accept a partner with different views to mine so long as they were accepting of my views in return. If they are stubborn or intolerant I find can be hard to even get along with someone even if their views are the *same* as mine.

So yes, I could, so long as the person wasn't intolerant of my views or their views weren't hateful (i.e. racist, homophobic etc.).

      This, exactly.

Although I have been with a few people who claim to be tolerant but will take every chance they get to debate their views with me. If my partner is respectful of my views and not an extremist then I can't see where it'd be a big problem. This is where having communication skills helps XD

Fuck no! It's like chalk and cheese. Image watching the news every day and having someone say the exact opposite of what you think. That shit get's real old real quick.

Personally I wouldn't mind because I love debating politics. My bf with whom I live and I have different political views but that doesn't make our daily discussions.

In the U.S. at this particular moment before the Elections we most certainly do.

This is a moot point for me now; my wife & I have pretty similar views.

Politics, to me, are like math. I know I need to, but I find it very hard to pay attention to them. In other words, I'm not that into politics. I don't know what my political views are, but if his are different than mine, then it wouldn't mean anything to me, as long as he's not a big political freak.

Politics is like a circle and the more extreme you get, the more like the other side you become....

My mom is catholic and my dad has no religion and they have been married for 25 year. I know this is about political views but honestly I don't really care all that much about politics-just like my dad is sort of indifferent to religion so it wasn't a big deal to marry someone religious- so I really don't care if my furture partner has a strong political view that I don't completley agree with, plus it's nice to not have exactly the same opinions on everything, makes it interesting.

  • As a Republican, I don't mind that my wife is in the Tea Party. As long as she is a child of God.

According to U.S. divorce statistics, the 4 greatest reasons (in no particular order) for divorce are:

    #1. lack of communication
#2. lack of agreement in basic philosophy/religion/politics
    #3. poor sex life
    #4. money issues

I was married to someone with polar opposite politics and a more than slightly different view on religion than mine. Although she did die of cancer, at one point I was thinking about divorcing her (before she got sick) due to those issues.

It really depends on how different our beliefs are.

Well, yes. You can't expect your partner to uphold the same views as you do in all situations.

It'd be fine as long as we were both open about things. I don't have a problem with someone believing something different but I might get offended if they were closed-minded about it.

Oddly enough I always thought I'd end up with someone the same religion and that politics wouldn't matter.

What surprised me is that life gave me the exact opposite. We're different religions but the same political views. And I like it! I don't want to change it at all!

I think it would make for a more interesting relationship. It would bother me from time to time, for sure, but I'd still respect their opinion not only out of love, but because they are entitled to their own way of thinking. I don't think everyone could make it work but there are people who can.

My girlfriend are exact opposites on this. I am Democrat while she is Republican. If we debate, she usually loses control and gets offended and does not let me get my point across or even ask her a question. We just do not discuss politics any more.
