Would you like to receive baked goods from a neighbor?

I love to bake cookies and other treats over the holiday season and I'd like to give some out as gifts to my neighbors. The thing is, I don't really know any of them except for 2. Would it be weird to give out treats to the neighbors that I don't know?

If you were my neighbor and I gave you treats, how would you feel? Would you eat them or throw them away?

Anyone else here do this?

Bonus: what are your favorite homemade holiday treats?

it's a little weird :/ 2

It depends on how close we are.

I've been raised to introduce myself to neighbours when moving in but if that's literally all the contact we've had, I'd politely turn down the food. My family has a background of: food allergies, high blood pressure, diabetes, and lactose intolerance. It makes rejecting food fairly easy.

I typically prefer to reject a gift than to accept it and toss it. Food waste is an issue. Maybe someone else would want it? Have you considered volunteering at a soup kitchen?

I don't bake for my neighbours because the majority of them dislike my family. I'm also a mediocre hobbyist baker at best. Our property's fairly tall and partially obscures their ocean views. Pretty sure we've somehow devalued their properties at least a touch.

In terms of favourite treats. I like: passover salted toffee matzah as well as red bean (sometimes lotus paste) mooncakes (with no salted yolks).

See how you spelled "neighbor". Notice that "u" are not in it. Let's keep it that way.

    • Does this mean we're not friends anymore?

It depends on whether I know or have seen them around the nieghborhood (mowing grass, etc). If someone I never seen or met before offers me food, I'll take it with a smile and thank them, but once the door closes I'll toss it in the garbage. Nowadays, you can't be too careful.

My advice, get to know your neighbors first. Arrange a block party or something before the weather gets too cold. That way, you can get to know everyone, their favorite treats/flavors, allergies, and your food won't end up in the trash.

    Bonus: Anything chocolate.

    • I live on a very quiet road and everyone seems to enjoy their peace and solitude so I don't think a party would go over well and nobody seems to want to be friends. We're all cordial but I mean nobody really wants more than that apparently (myself included). I'm just going to hand out the treats and they can do whatever. I enjoy making them so much and making custom containers to put them in so fuck it. Imma do what I want.

Do you like fudge? I make fudge.

If I knew them, I'd eat the treats. If I didn't know them, I'd still take the treats though I'd feel weird taking food from them and I'd wonder if they'd think that I owe them favors now or something.

I wouldn't make them treats. I'd be too concerned if someone turns out to be allergic and tries to sue. Then again, I'm a paranoid fuck that doesn't really trust strangers. Just make them the treats. It's a nice gesture and you might make some friends doing it.

My favorite holiday treats are candy canes, and holiday themed cakes, cookies, and chocolates. One of the things I like to do is wait until after Halloween and Christmas and buy a lot of clearance snacks. I put them in the freezer and my snack stash lasts for a long time.

    • Thanks for the response. I actually thought about "I'd wonder if they'd think that I owe them favors now or something." as I was pondering this. With me anyway, no-I want nothing in return. I enjoy baking and gifting so much that the acts are reward enough themselves.

I make the best chocolate chip cookies in the world and even though they aren't "Christmassy" I make them anyway. Do you think that's OK or are chocolate chips inappropriate to include? What's your favorite Christmas cookie?

Inappropriate? It really depends on if they're allergic to chocolate, diabetic, lactose intolerant or anything that prevents them from eating the food.

I like homemade sugar cookies that are shaped like candy canes and Christmas trees. Sometimes they're dipped in chocolate or have vanilla frosting on them.
