Would you like to have only one name?

Would you like it if your parents named you just one name, like Cher or McLovin (for example)? Yes, I know Cher has a whole name, but point is, she goes by Cher only.

How would you like that? What name would you like to have if you only had one?

Hate it!! 27
Love it!! 27
Gosh, I don't know. 35

Cher does not have a 'whole name' (implying surname too).
She once went by Cherilyn Sarkisian, but she has LEGALLY changed her name to just Cher.

I thought about that this morning. I guess I wouldn't mind.
Not that it would matter - everyone addresses me by my first name only anyway.

If I had to choose one, it would be "GuessWho."
...I can just imagine the confusion that it would cause.

I remember this one time when I used the name "Oh Shit It's Me" in an online game.
That sparked a massive "Who is 'me'" - "You are you" argument between the other players.

I wouldn't want it. The whole thing seems pretentious to me. You can get away with it if you're a musician or other performer, but you still risk looking like a douche, particularly if you pick something you think sounds tough or cool (think "Sting"), or if you choose something that you think sounds deep, intellectual, or mysterious ("Shadow", "Raven", "Plato", "Da Vinci"). You could choose something silly and self deprecating, but no matter what you pick, you're locking yourself into a persona. That's ok for stage names or online names, since you can shed them when you're not performing or online, but for real life, it would suck. Plus, you'd be stuck with whatever you think sounds cool now, which you'll probably hate later.

i think with plato and people like that they only had first names, followed by the town from which they hail.

Oh, I don't think it's pretentious that Plato was named Plato, I just think it would be pretentious for somebody NOW to start calling themselves Plato. Does that make more sense?

Oh, totally. I find it slightly annoying when people refer to Leonardo as "Da Vinci", actually, because that wasn't his name.

Obvious answer but I wouldn't mind being called dappled. I like it when someone refers to me as dappled here (or any other version of the dap-name), whereas in real life I don't care so much about people using my first name.

Well, I'd be happy to cut off contact with everyone who CALLS me by me given name…I really wouldn't want my mum calling me by the one name I choose, I mean. So basically that means cutting out all of real life. And I'd be totally okay with that.

No not you the white bob no not you the black bob with glasses, no not you the bob who never wears blue pants with blond hiar and blue eyes from his contacts, no not you the asain bob that likes to wear the color blue no no no none of you bobs the goth bob! Ok NO NO NO NO! I mean even three is not enough we are still getting poeple confused.

i only give my first name. my brother and father are good men and i won't carry my last name until i settle down and start a family. even my friends don't know it. i also like to be called "creature" if i had to have a mysterious single name. the name i carry and was given at birth can mean zero, to get on ones knees, or champion, depending on how it is spelled, and i like the irony in that.

Germany is quite strict on naming, first names have to be from a sanctioned list and your not allowed to chain name. There are other countries that have similar rules like argentina and spain. Sweden has strict laws where all names have to be court approved and they have to be a certain amount of letters in length. Portugal also has a list of sanctioned names you have to choose from. In japan names must be created from certain characters the government has allowed. In the UK and USA naming laws are a little slacker but if I remember correctly you can't have numbers in the name and any name deemed not suitable can be rejected by whoever signs it, a few people have been imprisoned on cases of child abuse because of names they have called their children. These are just the few that I can remember reading about, as far as citing goes you fuck off and find your own you lazy twat :)

Hm. You mean, like, everybody knows me and they all use only one name to address me?

I'll have to go with "God-Empress" then. I would greatly enjoy that.

If the leadership part does not come as a freebie, i don't really mind. Mostly, one has ONE nickname used by the social group you spend most of your time with. *shrug* Basically as good as suggested, except you may end up with a different name used in different life periods.

Well, that would feel rather stupid.

Because they are then locking in a name for me.
As your example of Cher shows, it's only fun if you get to choose by yourself.

Imagine your Parents named you McLovin and you turn out as overweight gay system administrator. You'll either be a star or never live if down. Not worth the risk.

Much more fun to go pick something for yourself and go by that. I have a short and direct nickname, which is used in work, by my friends, even my family.
Why that would be improved if i was only given that name in the first place is beyond me, the result would still be exactly the same, only when i need documents for official purposes there would be a difference.
