Would you ever live in an intentional community?

An intentional community is a group of people coming together in a place they create to live in some particular way. They can be large or small, rural or urban, religious or secular, ecological or materialistic.

Would you ever live in one?

  • No.

Knowing my luck I'd be sacrificed to the elder gods. Or else become their high priest.

...and then be sacrificed to the elder gods once the neighboring village attacks us.

      • Cult...Community...what's the difference?

You say tomato, I say jelly bean. And besides, this thread is just a figment of my imagination. As are you.

I have to agree with dappled. As much as I enjoy living among different people with different viewpoints, I think I would enjoy the experience of living in a community in which we can work together towards a common goal and live in peace with each other as opposed to experiencing constant conflict with each other.

This is why I enjoy the church experience. I know I will probably get some flack for this from the less-religious members of this site, but despite my disagreements with some of what the church does I really enjoy the way my church operates and if we had an entire community that operated in the method of the church, I would love to be a part of it.

Mormons are very community oriented, in our church, everyone is held to the same moral standard. We are all expected and encouraged to work our fair share, to do our fair share within our households, to contribute our fair share and to help provide aid to the less fortunate within our church. Honestly, our church is a great representation of socialism without the complete demise of the free market and to live in a community that operated by the same basic principles of my church would be quite an interesting experience.

No. When I go outside I like to see a variety of people and go to different places within a same city.

Nope. I'm barely able to tolerate people, so I would not be able to handle working together with them if I don't get paid for it.

Like a kibbutz, for example? I think I probably would, yes. Much as I like living in an environment where people have very different ideas, it would be nice to experience the other side of the coin and - for once - to be working towards a communal purpose without constant conflict or questioning.

Although I have been accused of being a dangerous cult leader more than once on IIN so maybe I shouldn't answer this one.

    • Yeah, a bit like a Kibbutz. A small group of people living together, or close proximity and sharing the chores of the land and home. I think a lot of people have misunderstood the concept. Intentional communities do not have to be isolated or cult like.

And you, a dangerous cult leader? Bwha ha hahaha! I'm not sure why, but I find this very funny. :P

This seems to happen a lot. I'm not sure people read the full text any more. Heaven knows why in your case because it was succinct, well-written and a perfect description of what you meant. I honestly don't see how you could have written it better.

But yeah, dangerous cult leader. Apparently I'm going to seduce all the men and women on IIN then get them in a compound, tell them the aliens are coming, and that they've got to drink poison now. I've just checked my diary though and I honestly can't see any day where I've noted down "Alien Poison Seduction Day". Or maybe this is all part of my trick. :P Hey, want to come around to my compound later to watch E.T. and drink some poi... ummm poission fruit juice? PASSION fruit. That's what I meant. Yeah, passion. *sends subliminal message*

Thanks, I refrained from over explaining because I wanted people to read it. I put a lot of thought into the definition and tried to keep it as general as possible. But I don't think it would have helped to point out that frat houses fit this description, as well as a group of friends living together under the same roof.

I wanted people to take the idea seriously. However that doesn't always happen here. It sometimes makes it difficult to post questions. For me, it's about redefining family. Single family homes for everyone was a nice thought after WWII but we cannot continue to structure our communities that way. We are cut off from people, and cut off from life. The reality is, we cannot live an isolated existence and expect community just to happen. I have lots of thoughts on this but the cynicism and negativity that plague society are deafening. Thank god I live in a bubble. How do I make it bigger?

And I have a giant white wall in my back yard that is perfect for projecting movies. If you help us set it up, you are welcome to host an "Alien Poison Seduction Day" in my back yard. But I never cared much for passion fruit. :P

    • Makes sense you want everyone to convert to purple.

Which reminds me, I think purple is take over the world. For some reason whenever I go to work most of us end up wearing the same color in various shades. Purple seems to be the most popular.

A guy I work with LOVES purple, he wears it every day. Only once was he wearing a different color, blue, but it was leaning towards a purplish shade. He was trying to get me to wear purple with him, showing me clothes I should buy that we're purple. He is now my fashion nemesis. I will never convert!!

*says the girl who's studying with a purple pen and purple+pink top*

      ;P

Wait! *checks undies* Okay, that's all the purple.

      Mwahahahaha ヽ(`▽´)ノ

When I first read this, I was dressed like a Reservoir Dog (minus the blood on my shirt). I'm in black and white today too. :/

And of course people wear purple where you work. I have indoctrinated you as a servant to the purple revolution. Although I see you are wavering by not wearing the correct colour underwear for the People's United Republic of Purple-Lovers in England (which has a nice acronym). :P

Your punishment is that you must reveal the colour you abandoned purple for in such a manner and I will pretend not to be excited at the news. Ha! :D

          Please, what do I have to do to be released from PURPLE? Is there any way out? *cries* I'll troll harder. =..{

I'm having lollipops in the night but it's day. The clouds are pink, a lovely shade, quite lovely. No strange rainclouds hovering close by. >OωO< Oh! A string! *paws at it* If only you hand paws of your own you could join in on all the fun. (ლ’▽’。)

It's curious we agree on this because I think most of these types of communities tend to be bolstered by a common faith and it would be unlikely for someone like me, who is faithless, to want to commune this way.

Although I do believe in common purpose and I believe most people work against each other. In my own weird way, I kind of do have a belief system that's very similar to yours.
