I've not hitchhiked but I have accepted rides from random strangers. (car broke down, I was walking and got offered a ride by passer by-happened a few times) Oh...well I did ask a van full of Jews for a ride once. Long story. I have also picked up a few hitchhikers myself. Would do it again, no doubt.

Did they also have a Jewish cat?

I have, once! I was with two girls and three guys, friends of mine, so I didn't feel scared or anything. It was cool, they were so nice. But, I wouldn't really do it again unless it feels safe! And never ever alone!

I did three transcontinental trips on my thumb in the sixties. SF to NYC and back and one way to NYC from SF. Only one bad ride with a drunk in a big Caddy convertible.
Most interesting was a one armed truck driver with two tractors piggybacked on his. Just stuck the stump of his right arm through the wheel and reached across to shift with his left.
Folks were pretty nice back then and even girls were relatively safe hitchhiking, if they chose their rides with care.
Wouldn't do it today, but then again, I'm not sure anybody you'd want to ride with, would pick you up.

I would do if I had to. But I've not had to yet.

  • I had to hitchhike to the nearest town when i was 18 while trying to drive to Canada. The guy that picked me up had saw my that my truck was stuck in a ditch covered in snow. I didn't really have to put my thumb out or anything like that. He just stopped and I got in keeping up my guard. I would not hitchhike unless I had no other choice choices or options.

I had to get from a mate's flat in Lincoln back to Luton.

I'd gotten a lift there from my friends brother, my mate had moved there for uni and I was meeting to hang out for the weekend, his brother was leaving Saturday but I'd stay till Monday, I was to let myself out as he had to get up for uni, and get the train back, I had money I'd just have to work out what train to get and where.

I didn't check the Times, come Monday morning I'm hanging like mad and I'd lost my phone the night before, instead of thinking rationally I thought, screw it, I'll hitch it.

Was walking for a while and cursing my stupidity before someone picked me up, luckily it only took 2 people to get me to Watford and from there I knew how to get back.

The first guy didn't really speak past greetings, I thanked him and offered petrol money, he found out I liked music and asked if I liked iron maiden ( I don't) but I felt awkward hiking anyway let alone saying evident like his taste in music so I said I hadn't heard much of them, cue a while journey of iron maiden blaring through the speakers.

The second was a buisnessman returning to Watford after a trip, he was brilliant, refused any petrol money or if I offered to pay for anything at the services, really funny guy too, he stopped at pretty much every service stop too to get us a ridiculous amount of junk food.

I was dreading it but I quite liked it, it's a little awkward at first though

That sounds pretty awesome. Although I've never heard of Watford. Is that some place in England? I have to say that sounds like a good journey. The second guy sounds awesome, always stopping by to get junk food and telling jokes. Sounds like a guy who you'd be old friends with. The first just sounds ordinarily cool. I have to say I'm a bit jealous, wish I had some sort of fun experience with strangers.

Yeah I just have to take 2 buses to get back from Watford and yeah, it was genuinely brilliant if I'm honest though I never had an experience with a stranger like that before nor since, never met him in my life but we're telling jokes and talking like we've known each other forces while all while feeling sick from all the doritoes, I didn't think I'd be like that with someone I didn't know but he was so open and full of life it was easy to just have a laugh with him
