Would you eat this locally raised beef?

Okay, so where I live it's pretty hard to buy locally raised beef(meat). The grocery stores carry plenty of beef and other meats, but it comes from other parts of the world, for the most part. There is a lot of beef animals raised locally, but all sold to other areas. The government here makes it really hard to process and sell beef or any kind of meat for that matter, with high inspection fees, registration fees, etc. Those who have tried to make a go of it usually only last a few years then they're pushed under with all the red tape and fees.

My question is, If someone in your local area ran a meat processing plant(abattoir)and bought local animals, but ran it under the radar of governing departments, would you buy this beef?

*note* plant would be run to all required codes, follow all required cleaning and sterilizing practices, and would have professional employees. The price point of the meat would be significantly lower because there would be no marketing or retail fees.

Please no off topic comments.

Absolutely, no question about it 9

No, but most companies don't have good conditions anyway.

Then again, I'm allergic to meats so, I'd probably wouldn't be able to eat it anyway.

no way. Because who guarantees me that all those things about the plant ARE true. That there are no hygiene problems etc... especially if you want to run it "under the radar", there will probably be a need for compromises...also with the location, transport and cooling.

    Simply too risky for me.

    • Valid points for sure.
One thing that would encourage me to go to a place like this would be that these guys have the added risk of being caught, which could result in far worse charges than violating hygiene practices.
If these people allowed you to see their operation whenever you like, and if also you knew that if something appeared wrong, that you could very easily report them anonymously, would you consider giving it a try?

I used to work in an abbattoir in the UK and Europe would only accept the highest grade so the lowest grade was sold at home. However, there would have to be qualified vets inspecting the animals in your local abbattoir looking for hormone injection sites. On one occasion a government vet found an injection site, and if a person had eaten it, it would've been the equivalent of eating 100 contraceptive pills. Male or female, adult or child!!!

I would doubt that the abbattoir would dump this meat if they were selling it under the radar, as you the customer would be unaware of it.

A difficult decision - but I don't eat supermarket meat either coz it's like Ghandi's flip flops! I prefer to go to a proper butcher's shop.

Really should have 3rd party oversight of slaughtering house. Even pro could be missing something simple or get lazy without oversight. If someone is willing to break laws to sell meat I would be concerned that they may also be willing to break rules/code about slaughtering.
