Would you assume that an uncharacteristic confession is a joke?

Assume that you're an honours students.

When someone who is extraordinarily different from you (e.g: an award-winning athlete, who is usually outgoing and confident) is too shy to directly confront you with a confession and instead opts to write out his/her feelings and have someone else deliver them to you - would you assume that this is all an elaborate joke?

Yes, I would assume that it is a joke. 4
No, I wouldn't assume that it is a joke. 10

    Not enough information.

Well--obviously I thought--I would need to know the content of the confession to decide how likely it would be taken for a joke. The relationship between the two people could be important too. But assuming this has any bearing on real life, I understand if you don't want to say.

Sounds like a 'teen angst' movie to me.

    • Hahaha, well I guess it is "teen angst", but this did happen in real life.

I would treat it with suspicion until I'd spoken with the person.

School is a messed up place. The social machinations run wide and deep. Glad im done with school forever. As for your question, it doesnt really matter what the motive is. All that matters is your response (or lack of response). Always strive to do as little as possible and do not get involved unless absolutely necessary. For everything else, best to just not give a fuck. You're there to learn, and thats all there is to it.

Seems suspicious. What confession do you mean? "I like you"?
If it's about love, everyone can be nervous. Some people might call me outgoing and confident, but when I like a lady I turn into a scared little kid.
As an athlete he/she might be very confident in physical stuff but at the same time have no emotional confidence at all.

Then again, yes, he/she could also be a huge dickhead who's trying to pull a really stupid joke.
You know this person, right. How does he/she treat other people? You must have seen some evidence of whether or not this is a cruel person.

Oh and please tell me if it's a man or a woman, cause this "he/she" thing is getting out of hand

    • The note said "[First name], will you go out with me?" It was definitely written by him. I can recognise his handwriting.

The athlete is a man, I'm a woman. From my knowledge he treats his friends pretty well and he's generally polite to staff and strangers.

From the few interactions between the two of us, he's respectful and admires my work ethic. We haven't really talked a lot about our lives outside our studies and his sports. He has a few friends (one good male friend and two female friends) who don't particularly like me for reasons I'm unsure of.

In this case I'd assume he's being sincere. Him liking you could also be the reason his female friends aren't very fond of you.
Have you answered him by now? Do you even like him?
