Would terminal cancer cause you to commit suicide?

Sadly, Tony Scott, British-born Hollywood director of 'Top Gun,' 'Days of Thunder' and 'Crimson Tide,' committed suicide by jumping off the Vincent Thomas Bridge in the San Pedro port district of Los Angeles, California. He was the younger brother of fellow film director Ridley Scott. Scott had inoperable brain cancer at the time of his death. Would you take your own life if you learned you had terminal cancer?

My state has a Death with Dignity law so drastic measures are not required and end of life counseling is available. I also think it is important to note that just because science can keep you alive, doesn't mean you have to choose that option.

Would I commit suicide? No. That term is insulting to those who are going through the pain of a terminal illness. I would, however, do what I could to shorten the length of suffering and not draw out the inevitable for both me and my family.

  • If I finally started to physically see myself beginning to succumb to the disease, i.e. severe weight loss, no hair, skin with no tone or texture, etc...then I would most certainly take my own life without a second thought. At that point you would be doing yourself and loved ones (if you are lucky enough to have them) a big favor by sparing everyone ALOT of suffering.

And also at that point there is pretty much no hope left at all.

It depends what type of cancer. My Godmother and grandmother both died of cancer (my godmother in her thirties). Both were very ill and weak towards the end but apart from the last week or two, their lives were still worth living.

If it was a type of cancer where I'd find it difficult to breathe and would slowly suffocate, though, I don't think I could cope with that.

To me it seems like one of those things where you don't truly know how you'd respond until it happens. And I feel like any answer I give seems insensitive.

No, I don't think I would. I'm going to die eventually anyway. Of course I don't know the actual reasons behind why he did it, but I can certainly see why he would.

  • If I had Alzheimer I'd kill myself.

Of course I would. Why prolong suffering? I'm not a Christian!

    Maybe.

But I would sure smoke a ton of weed first :)

Fuck weed, I'd finally get to try heroin, crack, PCP, meth, x, acid, (all in different combinations) and whatever the hell else I could get my hands on. Who cares, it's not like I'm gonna get addicted!!!

I would probably try a few of those, but I think I would just stick to weed mainly though.

Speaking as a hypothetically terminal patient, I'm sure weed would be a good "foundation" buzz to support a nice acid, PCP, bath salt, mushroom, notrous oxide (ala Dennis Hopper in Blue Velvet), oxycontin, formaldehyde, and draino laden evening...and an 8 ounce glass of wild turkey!!! (calling Dr. fucker-Rock & Roll M.D.)

After all that consumption I'd probably have to go steal an airplane or something.

Well neither am I, but again this is a hypothetical situation and in the real world I might have a few drinks this weekend, none of all that other crazy shit.

If I was terminal and that obliterated on all those drugs I'd never suicide either (although I wouldn't rule out an overdose). Why ruin such a great buzz?

On another note maybe I'd steal a nitro-burning funny car instead of an airplane. Fun fun fun on the interstate!!!

    Absolutely, and here's why.

    I have a plan.

If I ever were to find out I'm surely going to die, I'll wait it out as long as I can until I'm close to death, then use my death to prank the shit out of people.

I will stand on top of a building, not too tall but not too small. 10 or 15 floors would be perfect.
I will tie a rope around my ankle, secured to the building.
I will rig up a piano wire around my neck, also secured to the building.
I will then glue my hands to my head, and jump.

Imagine the look on people's faces when they see someone hanging from a building appearing as though they just ripped their own head off.

There was a rumour that Scott had inoperable brain cancer at the time I wrote this post although it has subsequently been reported that his widow told investigators that the rumour was "absolutely false." Hopefully, this won't detract from the question which I asked in good faith. All my condolences to Scott's family, friends and colleagues.

I refuse to become a financial burden to my loved ones, so I'd do it to spare them from taking care of me.

I don't know. Chances are that terminal brain cancer ends with an ugly death. a kid I know [full scholarship at Cornell] has recently found out he has a brain tumor :/ Once you have something like that, all you want to do is survive.

Nah. Nothing wrong with suffering. I agree with shackleford96 though. I'd blaze more.

No; I'd go out and do exciting things with the last few days of my life, that I was too afraid to do when I didn't know I was recently going to die, like sky diving, bungee jumping. I'd probably spend on my money to travel and what not. What's the point of giving up and making it all end so soon?
