Would it be sensible to employ an external consultant for a business?

Currently my business is doing well but could possibly hit some rough waters soon. I am contemplating hiring some external consultants to identify what areas it could improve for me, however do you think its a good idea? I am concerned I might waste my time or money, but I don't want to pass up an opportunity to promote new growth before we run out of work.

I would pay for an external Consultant Anytime 1
I would only pay for a Consultant if my business was failing 1
Its better to get consultants in when things are going well 4
Consultants are not necessary and issues can be solved in house. 2
I'd never pay for a consultant if it was my business. 2

People on here probably have no idea what you are talking about.

If it is your own Business you should network and research yourself first. Do what you can without consultants, unless you just want to waste money.

From my very limited experience, the consultants made recommendations that management disagreed with and were ignored.

I agree that the consultants would need relevant experience to be of any benefit to you.

I have literally no business experience beyond watching The Apprentice and Dragon's Den, but my instinct would be to hire a consultant who knows what they are talking about just in case (as suckonthis9 says, check for their references before you use one).

Yes, it might be a sound idea if you can foresee trouble ahead. However, I feel that you should be cautious as to which consultant. Check their references (ask) and reputation (research) thoroughly before you retain them.
