Worst uk prime minister?

Which of these five unsuccessful Prime Ministers of the UK is the worst in your opinion?

Oh, and by the way, if you choose "Other" and say either Winston Churchill or Margaret Thatcher, you really need to wake up.

Neville Chamberlain, who brought Britain into war with Hitler 8
Anthony Eden, involved in the Suez crisis 4
Alec Douglas-Home, involved in the Profumo Scandal 0
James Callaghan, who plunged Britain into mass unemployment 9
Gordon Brown, who failed at almost everything... 15

None of them were partically good, however I do believe that Gordon Brown isn't completely to blame for most of the things that happened under his leadership, he basically got given a sinking ship- what's there left to do?

David Cameron, who raied tuition fees. I don't understand why people here voted for him, and then protest against him not even a year into his mandate...

I don't know enough about the Prime Ministers from before I was born to vote.

I'm not happy with the Coalition government right now though. I voted LibDem because they seemed to have some good ideas, but look where that ended up..

I also voted Yes to AV, but that anti-AV propaganda funded by the Conservatives fucked the referendum right up. Too many people believe whatever's posted through their letterbox.

As Carolann said Chamberlain bought time for Britain to re-arm and by appeasing Hitler he was actually going by the majority of public wishes. At least he listened to public opinion and was trying to do what was best for the country in his eyes; although admittedly he may not have gotten it right at times. Chamberlian did not 'bring Britain into war with Germany' in fact he did his best to prevent this. The event which led to Chamberlain's resignation, the German invasion of Norway, was partly due to Churchill's wrong doing but his of course was overlooked. Thatcher was/is an absolutely ruthless and disgusting human being, however as for her job as Prime Minister she was not the worst. Brown was brought in straight after the London terrorist attacks and I do not think he was given a fair bite of the cherry at all and I do believe he was unfairly treated.

  • Hard to pick one. Margaret Thatcher was cold-hearted and ruthless, Tony Blair and Bush started an illegal war, David Cameron cares nothing for the working class and only looks after the fat cats.

  • I pick Maggie Thatcher, but it depends you seem like a Tory so I guess you would not agree, I did not mind Tony Blair until it was found there was no Weapons, gordon brown was not meant to be PM and it is unfair for people to blame him for the Economic Problems he did not create the Global Melt down, Winston Churchill was just lucky he was PM at the right time even though i agree he was successful. you can not pick one person out of a list who was the worst pm because not all the PM'S are in the list and you never said why they where the worst and its not really a fair poll because you said ''Oh, and by the way, if you choose "Other" and say either Winston Churchill or Margaret Thatcher, you really need to wake up.'' as though every thing they did was so great that they never created any wrong doing while they where in office, anyway what does it matter to me I am from NI and I would not in a million years vote for any of the parties you English seem to love so much they have all did wrong they would not be human if they never,

David Cameron without a shadow of a doubt. I went to tesco the other day and there were peoiple there from food bank cos people cannot afford to buy food (keep in mind peeps this is the 21st century) David Cmeron and his wonderful coalition should hang their heads in shame. Poor innocent children paying for the mess that the banks caused utterley disgusting! I'm not ashamed to say I walked around tescos with my eyes filling up. It's brilliant that people are so kind to others in crisis and that people are wonderful enough to volunteer, but isn't it obsurd that people have to do that in the 21st century. and we're all in this together....Apparently.. xxxx

Got to go a long mile to beat Harold wilson and Tony Blair...terrible mess left behind them. These days they are all as bad as each other, puppets and puppeteers pulling them from all directions. Sometimes l think they are too young and do not know enough about life and they forget to look back at history before barging into the unknown future with all the elgance of a wildebeeste at a tea party.

You can't blame prime ministers for the situations they inherit. Chamberlain didn't precipitate the war nor did Callaghan cause rising oil prices. Gordon Brown inherited an untenable position and, admittedly, didn't help his own cause by being palpably unfit to lead. David Cameron has presided over the sharpest leap in unemployment in decades but that isn't his fault either.

Being a prime minister is like having five minutes at the wheel of an ocean liner that takes four miles of ocean to stop. Being "lucky" enough to be a war prime minister such as Thatcher or Churchill doesn't make you bullet-proof either.

To answer your question, though, Anthony Eden did most to set back the country he supposedly represented.

    • Chamberlain actually bought England time to prepare. If we had gone in right away we would have been annihilated like the French and Poles.
