World altering scientific breakthroughs! :o

One of these four ideas will be implemented in the future. On the 1st day of January in year 2014, to be exact. If you had a say in the matter, which one of these ideas would you choose, and why would you choose it?

Scientific breakthrough #1:

A human augmentation that would allow everyone on Earth to communicate with each other regardless of their native language. This would include the ability to understand *all* written literature as well as ancient paintings and carvings, etc.,.

Scientific breakthrough #2:

A bioengineered tree that grows meat. Beef, pork, lamb, chicken, and seafood, etc.,. The meats and seafood will taste just as they do now. It's real meat and seafood, only minus the disease, parasites, and antibiotics. It doesn't die until it's plucked from the branches. And the supply is virtually endless.

Scientific breakthrough #3:

Hovering vehicles that operate without human assistance. They run on solar energy and purify the air whenever they're on and running. There's an option to shut the autopilot off. They move and feel the way our vehicles feel now. All ground vehicles (except classic cars) will be recycled and transformed into hovering vehicles. Classic cars will be fully restored and kept in museums.

Scientific breakthrough #4:

A second username. You'll be able to have two usernames that are side-by-side with each other and they're spaced. You'll also be able to use two different colors, one for each username. And you'll be able to change the position of them at any given time. Or you can shut the feature off all together.

Which one of these groundbreaking life altering inventions would you choose?

Number One 19
Number Two 11
Number Three 15
Number Four 10
O.o 10

I like #1. The pessimist in me (yep, she exists) sees all sorts of problems with two and three. And 4 would shake the world too much, I think it might cause chaos.

Wow! Number 1 was great, number 2 was fantastic, number 3 even more so...and then 4. It just has to be 4, really, doesn't it? Mind. Blown. Hehe, I kid, I already have a spacey name. I'm even part of a Space Club!:P We're one step ahead of you, OP!>:) Hahaha, that option made me laugh.

Both number 2 and 3 would be fantastic. However, I wonder how many people would be out of jobs in both cases. Not sure why that popped into my head. Hmm. Really, really good options.

I really love this post, by the way:). Best one I've seen around in a little while. What does the O.o option involve, though, just out of curiosity:P? What happens if we vote it:O!?

I think it says a lot about the age group at IIN, that Option Number 1 is the most popular. For the continued existence of the human race it is absolutely vital that we address the issue of climate change and CO2 emissions.

Option 3 is therefore the most important breakthrough, considering that travel would have the potential to be not only carbon neutral but also sustainable.

Following on from that, Option 2 has a means for providing a sustainable food source. Over fishing and extinction is already a huge problem.

Option 1 is pointless because that is something we can do ourselves already. We can learn different languages or use interpreters.

Aww, but I'd want a three part and colour name. Two purple d's and a green apple inside them. As tempting as it is, it's breakthrough #3 for me.

Hahaha, same here. #3 would let me go places, and it would make a huge difference in global warming.

i think its time for "science" to take a long awaited break.

As a bird, I'd have to go with the meat tree.

  • Number 1 initially...but solar cars would be nice since were running out of oil

The style this poll is written reminds me entirely of me. :S

Anyway, I chose option number 3 for the awesome hovering cars. :D It kind of reminds me of the video game Fallout how the classic cars are kept in a museum. Also, the whole air-purification solves the problem of gaseous fumes from cars damaging the ozone layer, which is quite a contribution.

I do love option number 1 though. :(

Does option 2 grows anywhere on the planet or must it have a special climate?

#2 would mean a lot to me personally :P It would have great implications for global warming too, but probably not as much as #3.

#1 would be good for an anthropologist or someone who wanted to study dead or extinct languages (would they count, by the way? Or if it's gone is it gone forever? :P). Really though, there are already billions of people I don't communicate with who *do* speak my language, so I doubt I'd make as much use of this as I hope I would. In terms of greater world harmony, I think it would be nice but not crucial.

#3 I have no real idea about, what with not driving. I think it would do a lot of good. If I'm not mistaken, transportation only accounts for 14-15% of greenhouse gas emissions though, so while it would slow down the process it wouldn't save the world. The real challenge would still be to force politicians to force corporations to comply with meaningful regulations. Yeah it would make people feel better about the damage they are doing personally, but that sense of "everything's okay now" could do more harm than good :P

Obviously #4 is better than any of them though ;D
