Working til i'm 90

Is is normal to feel like I'm going to have to work until I'm like 90 years old? If I even live that long! Why, you ask? Simple: our economy has gone to SHIT. With our struggling economy, inflation always on the rise, and shit-ass wages, there's no doubt in my mind that I will NOT be able to retire at the good old age of 65. Also will we have any pensions left? I doubt it. Will all get sucked away after the baby-boomers are gone. And not many companies anymore look at the long term. Most don't offer any pension plan at all. So yeah I think I'm going to be 90 and still working... if I live that long. And don't go telling me to go get a high-paying job, cause thats easier said than done!!! I have what people call a somewhat "decent paying" job, more than minimum ($12/hr), but it sure as hell doesn't pay the bills! Like I said, inflation is hurtin us! Gas is always on the rise, along with the price of food, electricity, etc. Those prices go up, but our wages barely change. I won't be one bit surprised if I have to work well past 65 in order to keep myself afloat.

Unfortunately, I think it's normal to feel this way in this economy with the horrible retirement plans we have in addition :(.

  • I dont want to live til I am 90, working til I am 90 makes me want to throw up.

Government workers have pensions, though for not much longer.

  • I say this is pretty normal. People who retire from work have a cut on income which can prove to be very difficult today. If you think working at 90 years old is bad, there is a woman who recently had her 130th birthday and only recently got out of work. Try conserving as much money as you can to put away until retirement comes around. Another good thing to look at is that Florida is a great retirement residence, and since so many homes have recently been foreclosed on, they are being sold for much more affordable prices now. =D

Become a comedian or other entertainer so you can make fun of that attitude and other people will agree.

Don't count on the government to take care of you. No matter what you make try to save at least 10% of everything you make. As soon as you have saved enough start learning where to invest it and don't get advice from a broker, they will give you self serving advice. This invested money is for your future retirement.

    • Thanx! Yeah we've been setting aside some money in a savings account. We had a nice amount built up but then got screwed over and had to use it to fix our house and pay bills. Hoping one of these days to actually come out ahead. We're going to start saving money again... I hope!

    • I'd love to be able to relax, have fun and travel. Oh and get some stuff done around the house! But it will probably never happen.

Well, those Wal-Mart greeters seem very happy...All kidding aside I was making that amount last year and felt the same way. I personally went back to school to get my teacher certification because Illinois has kick-ass pension for teachers...which will hopefully be there for me in 25 years. I make way more this year, but I definitely pay more in student loans a month too. I still come out ahead though. You might go to a community college and get some credits. Ask for a raise. Give them reasons why you've earned it, you never know If you ever make anything, you can have an online store on Etsy.com for like 20 cents an item or you could sell crap on Ebay. People will buy anything if it looks like Jesus or Elvis.

It's normal. I believe I will be working for the remainder of my life. I feel depressed because of it. But that's life now in this country. You have other options. You don't have to limit yourself to staying here. That's also easier said than done, but it's true. It's your life. Make it what you will.

i was in your same situation a few years back. i took a personal finance class. wow, i thought i knew what i was doing, but the way i lived, i was barely keeping up. this class was hard, but well worth it. i've learned how to handle my money. it makes everything easier when money isn't an issue all the time.
