Working in retail made me not want to join the army

As a young child, I used to idolize soldiers. I thought it was the most noble thing to risk your life for your countrymen. I planned on joining the army after high school.

This all changed once I worked retail for a few months. I got my first job at a Kmart, cashiering, and after having to deal with so many shitty, rude people, I've developed a deep hatred for my own countrymen. Having to work with the public taught me how greedy, rude, selfish, and entitled the people are.

I noticed another trend, however. The people from foreign countries would be far more polite than the normal customer. People with british accents, for instance, were all around terrific people. Understanding. Polite. Patient. They were a complete contrast to the average customer.

Is it normal that I've developed a hatred for my own American people, and don't want to fight in our military like I once wanted to?

Ah the joys of working in the service industry. Chin up don't let the hoards of unwashed get you down. You've just had an awesome paid lesson on how you don't want to act. So don't! x

You have to be either blindly patriotic or extremely desperate to join the military/or combination of both. Period. Good on you for not signing up. You displayed at least some intelligence and enough drive to make it on your own without selling yourself to the lowest bidder.

If you are going to base your entire opinion of America on the people who shop at Kmart, you are pretty sad. Kmart is 3 levels below Walmart. It would be like thinking everyone in the US is like the nuts on Hollywood Blvd on Halloween night. It just isn't that way. You probably have never been out of your own little town, somewhere in Armpit, Arkansas, and you already know everything, correct? I think that the US would probably be better off if you just save some money and move to the UK. You seem to like the Brits better. You would be much happier there. Give it a shot and bon voyage.

These days, Kmart is above Walmart. It's typically very uncrowded and the prices are high on non-sale items. Most of the people going to Kmart are savvy shoppers getting a deal and people willing to pay the price for avoiding Walmart.

I've lived in Florida for 8 years, Oregon for 1 year, and California for 9 years. That's not even an essential detail though, as we're living in the digital age, where you interact and observe people from all over the globe, no matter where you're living. I witness the behavior of Americans on twitter, youtube, the news, etcetera, on a daily basis.

Most of the people shopping at the kmart in my town only do so because the walmart is an hour away. It's more of a necessity than a choice. I would have rather worked at the walmart, but kmart was within walking distance. The behavior of customers is pretty much the same at Walmart though. Still the same customers treating the employees like garbage. Still the same lunatics trampling over each other on black friday. Have you seen some of the viral black friday videos on the web? Really highlights how fucked up as a society we are.

Not just that specific experience. That was a major one, having to have so much direct interaction with the people, but I've gotten a negative impression of America from all angles, not just that. I hate the gangster rap culture that glorifies violence and theft. I hate the celebrity worship. I hate the insanely imbalanced wealth distribution, where huge portions of our people live in poverty while 1% possesses over half the wealth. Compare this to some European or Asian countries, and we look like total barbarians.

America fights dumb wars and has heaps of dumb people. Why do we, the elite 1% like it here? Because it is the only country that allows genius level immigrants to get rich. Importing brain power gives you the best technology, the best solutions, and the best business opportunities.

Genius level immigrants are the turbo-chargers of the American wealth creation machine.

A cashier at a grocery store asked me twice if I found everything I needed, forgetting my first answer. Maybe the people working in the retail industry are the problem. Don't give up your dream of slaughtering brown babies overseas.
