Work is such a drag.....

Normally I'm not one to complain, but I really feel helpless because I can't find another job right now. I'm starting college soon, and I don't feel like dealing with looking, and I have messed up my credit a little, so it will be hard for me to get a better paying job.

The problems I'm having is the a/c is broke, and I have to stand behind a 450 degree oven and 998 degree toaster oven. It's so bad I have vomited 3 or 4 times everyday for the past week, because of the heat. We are very understaffed, and as much as I like being an assistant manager at a Subway restaurant I really feel like giving up, and getting on welfare for the college semester.

I'm also very sick of employees bickering at each other over petty BS, and I'm sick of dealing with my boss cheating on his wife with the store manager. Is any of this crap normal at any other job, because IF it is I may decide to change my major at college this semester?

What you described is how most jobs in the service sector are. So don't expect to find a better job at some other restaurant. You won't. After you get a degree, if it's not in business or law or civil engineering or medicine, then you'll probably have to keep taking classes after you graduate to get licensed in some specialized business field (like real estate, etc.). Even more sophisticated jobs are still frustrating as hell and get old real fast, so I think the bottom line you need to understand here is that WORK IS WORK. It sucks, and that's why we call it 'work.' I hate it, most people hate it, and the few people who don't hate it are a bunch of lucky bastards - talk to them and find out how the hell they do it. Good luck, and don't get a degree in philosophy or english.

You have what we call "FREE AGENCY" USE IT.
College is to important to give up. You can always get another job else where. As for the bosses in this world, I have one thing to say to them. THERE ARE LAWS OUT THERE TO PROTECT THE WORKER. IF YOU VIOLATE THEM YOU CAN BE FIRED. So think twice before reacting.

haha that's so weird i'm an assistant manager at my subway too and i feel the exact same way. yeah it's actually dangerous with no a/c. I've had customers pass out and hit there head on the floor, dehydrate, all sorts of crap. I've been dealing with it for three years because, at least its a steady paycheck.

Here's a general tip that applies to tons of situations, and certainly yours:

If something feels wrong, GTFO. You know what that means I assume. Get the eff out.

The only reason you wouldn't gtfo is because you're afraid of what others may say. Well, let them say what they've got to say. They don't know how you feel. They can express their views , you can respectfully listen, but it's ultimately you that you've got to please.

You don't really need the money, I'm guessing. College is not important, it's vanity. You probably have parents you can live with. One thing is for certain, if you're living in continual anguish something needs to change. You'll deal with the consequences as they arise. You can do better, or else you would be grimly determined to keep at 'er.

every work situation is different in so many aspects. people cheat on wives generally cheat with someone they see on a regular basis (work, bar, ect.). not much you can do about that, i cant tell you to tell his wife on him, that your personal choice if you want to put a thorn into thier marriage (i do suggest you bring to his attention how you feel about his cheating on his wife affects your ability to respect him which lowers your morale and desire to do what he asks you to do) as to going to college, be prepared to make sacrifices, college is not an easy place when you dont have anything to worry about. its ten times harder when you ahve a family and home and other cares of this world.

    • Wow thank-you so much for taking the time out of your day to type this because it really made me feel a lot better. Even with how old this post is I still am stressed out from the same job and i'm just so tired of the drama. I have tried to quit and failed miserably at finding a job because nobody is hiring around here and I do not have a degree yet. I feel like my only escape is a university, and until then I will just have to suck it up and deal.

Your present job is a good example of what happens to people without marketable job skills. When you go to college make sure you learn skills that employers value. It is easy to go to college, and end up studying subjects that interst you, even though they will not interest employers. I know. I did that.

Vi, your in alabama? I am proud of you for going to college. Your pic really does you justice. I know a girl like you that in high school she was not all that, and maybe a little picked on. SHITE MUSLIM- you should see her now. She is a friggin knock out. I pictured you as some white trash living in a trailor with the door tore off from a pit bull that is chained to those shitty steps in front of the damn thing. Oh and I though your baby was a mudshark??? what happened? he albino?

  • The AC is broken it will eventually be fixed then you will have a nice temperature again. Spare a thought for people who never have AC at work. In one job I had I had to walk into an oven just after it was turned of and pull large trolleys of biscuits out once I worked in a bakery and had to stand in front of an industrial oven all day and remove loaves of bread. Ive been to subway and yes they may have hot ovens but they are insulated and you really have no Idea what it is like to be exposed to the temperatures you speak of. I would also suggest that you do a bit less whining and get on with your job. If the boss is fucking someone what business is it of yours are you jelous your not getting any maybe if you give him a bit extra youll never see the ovens again and can be laid across his nice cool AC desk

    • Just another thought if you wanna how fucked ovens can really be ask a Jew

      Comment Hidden ( show )
  • haahaa I knew I would get such a laugh from this. uhhh but yea the toaster oven does get up to about 1000 degrees literally. i've read it in the manual, and a guy from subway corporate said it did. I looked at the thermometer today and it said the inside temp was 96 degrees, so yea it's very hot in there, but the lobby is cooler b/c we keep the door open and it has ceiling fans so customers don't care. I don't think i'm bickering over trivial things, because I don't think people have to deal with this kind of crap at an office job or whatever, and all I wanted to know is if someone could tell me if they do?
