Will they change

I am just wandering if a convicted sex offender can change his/her ways, and also would you let that person prove that thay no longer want to pose a threat to anyone or would you want to have them in prison/jail for the rest of there natural life?

yes 7
no 5
lock them up for life 10
give them a chance 12
they will never change 12
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

The "sex offender" definition is already too broad to begin with. An 18-year-old who has sex with a 17-year-old is a "sex offender" just the same as the creepy neighbor who tricks children to come and play at his house.

Some can change. It's all dependent on the nature of the crime and the nature of the offender. I believe that some people can learn to control their desires, to personify and humanise the object of their desires (instead of seeing them as sex objects) so the moral compunction is too great for them to ignore, to understand their motivations and find other, less destructive outlets.

Many won't be helped. They've already crossed that line and, given the opportunity, they'll do the same again. Some are sociopaths, some have mental illnesses very difficult to treat, some are just 'too damaged', beyond help. However, that shouldn't mean we should condemn every person who commits a sexual offence to prison for life. That's actually ridiculous and barbaric. Every case should be looked at individually and every offender should be assessed individually. They are people too, who have the right to a fair and balanced trial and a fair and balanced sentence.

No. It doesn't matter if they change because that doesn't heal victim's scars and trauma. They should get what they deserve.

I don't think they're capable of changing what they're inclined to do, but they may be able to gradually develop more ability to resist their urges.

As a side note, convicted sex offenders aren't necessarily rapists or perverts. I'm not sure if it's nationwide, but I know where I live public urination will get you on the sex offenders list.

    This isn't an IIN question.

But it's a perfectly normal question to ask random nitwits with Internet addictions. Beats doing some research or asking an actual professional with credible knowledge of the subject.

They don't change .. The fact that 90 percent of convicted sex offenders serve their sentence .. get released back into society & "repeat offend" supports this .. bring back capitol punishment i say then we wouldn't have such a fkd up society today with those bastards wasting space & resources !

Well it really depends on the crime. While I think most sex offenders deserve to be labeled as such some are convicted for stupid reasons. Like peeing in public if someone witnessing you are technically "A sex offender" which is stupid. Anyways if its something like a rapist they should have fixed this issue before this kind of thing happened. I also don't think we should give them more chances after they do something like this. You can stop a pedo from raping kids if they are willing to control themselves, if you identify the issue and if you get them therapy. No its stupid to want to give these people another chance. You are putting more people at risk! These people usually give off red flags before they hurt someone. Sometimes these red flags are ignored. Generally people will ignore any bad behavior if you study hard and get good grades. People assume stupidity means you are a danger. Not always the case as we have some very brilliant killers, rapist, and child abduction.

Give them A chance. One chance afterwards, and if they still can't change, no more chances.
