Will i get the same weight gain as my father?

I’m a skinny dude and I’m 24 years old. My dad used to be the same way when he was my age. Over the years my brother was born in ‘91, my dad has been gaining weight, and now weighs about 250 some pounds at age 46. I’m about 140 and have high metabolism, but so did my dad, and mom tells me I might catch up with him when I get to his age. We both eat about the same amount, I eat a little less than him. Thing is though, I’m a regular smoker, and I heard that increases metabolism. He never smoked in his life. So am I okay?? Will I not gain all that weight?

Good points, though I've never heard that statistic. Also, with regards to smoking and metabolism: it's true that smoking will increase your metabolism by effectively jacking up your heartbeat, but the irony is that it's just as much stress on the heart as being overweight would be (heart failure is the leading cause of death by smoking). Anyway, the idea that smoking will somehow counteract and balance out the harmful effects of obesity is laughable (and this is coming from a light smoker himself). Try maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

It is said that as you age, your metabolism rate slows down over time. Heck most people are overweight but there are some who (maybe retired) hit the gym everyday and train. This guy I know looks mid 60s but buff enough to beat up my ass.

Lots of fat people smoke, no worries.

Only you can decide if you will gain the weight or not.

Even if you're genetically predisposed for late-life weight gain you do not have to accept it. It's one of the things you can take charge of yourself and control.

For example one woman I know... her family has a history of heart disease and early death due to obesity. She made a point of refusing to follow their paths and took control of her physical health. She's already lived longer than her ancestors did; they died somewhere in their 50s while she's still kicking around closer to 60 and expects to live longer still.

if you're worried, talk to your doctor about what plan will work best for you. :)

Just keep on top of it. My older brother always had very high metabolism and ate nothing but sugery junk food. Its barely caught up to him, but he does have a tiny belly when he never did before. I try to keep my weight under control because there's a lot of heavy people in my family and I don't want to be one of them
