Will i get in trouble for stealing newspaper out of a recycle bin

I didn't know it was illegal and now I'm really scared because I was at the place for like an hour in broad daylight and if they had security cams they could easily find out who i am is it normal also I wasn't actually "dumpster diving" as in going inside the dumpster, they were just near the front of the bin so i reached in and grabbed like 20 or 30 newspapers, is this bad? i'm afraid to go out now

    As long as no one is being disturbed by your dumpster diving, you're pretty well safe. You're basically jaywalking on a street no one ever uses. Dive on!

    Trespassing is what they'd charge you with if they were so inclined...not theft.

    Some places don't care but the ones that do will usually give you a warning first. Just do your thing and don't worry about it unless they tell you otherwise. Or you could explain that you work at the shelter and ask them to set aside papers for you to pick up so you don't have to fish them out of the dumpster.

      I volunteer at a (no kill) animal shelter and they need newspaper for lining the puppies' enclosure
