Welllll...speaking off of freshman year genetics illnesses are more likely to be passed from "mom" because of the X chromosome is the only one that can carry traits...or something like that. So seeing a doctor in the future won't hurt

Most likely Bi-Polar. Most popular mental Illness that messes people up like that. My mom was like this. And yes, me and my bro's have it. My littlest bro don't, but me and my middle bro do. Its per person rather you will or wont. Sometimes you get it or don't. Also depends on the illness, if its not bi-polar, then it might or might not pass down to you guys.

I have a very similar situation and many of the same fears. I think that if we are both aware of the behaviors and what is WRONG behavior... we are both much more likely to avoid those behaviors in the future. That is the difference between our parents and ourselves... we can learn from their mistakes if we try. Good luck to you.

Depends on what mental illness she has, and then you have to consider whether it was dominant or recessive for you, and some skip a generation, and so on.. Ex, I'm bipolar, but that stemmed from early childhood trauma

Genetics gives you a range of what you can and cannot be. Being aware will help you make everyday decisions to not become that person.

I inherited a mental illness. I began to be aware of it at the age of 14, but have had symptoms since 5 years of age.
If your family is pretty stable than you might be less likely to have it as severely as your mother, if it was inherited.
Mental illness is 1/2 nature and 1/2 nurture.
Since you are aware of the illness your mother has, study it and be aware of the behaviours.
I'm sure you don't have it, because your father would let you know if he saw you behaving like your mother.

you are a smart kid to realize this. i don't know what your mom's problem is, but not everything is genetic.

so dad is right, it isn't carved in stone that either you or your sister will inherit the illness.

ask dad to be on the lookout for bad behavior in both you and your sister and if he sees anything like "mom" to please have a talk with you. more than likely he's already doing this.
