Good for you! Yes, we're all powerless over the thoughts, actions and emotions of others. I think people waste lots of time trying to control and influence others. Besides I hate it when I feel someone is trying to manipulate me.
Yes, you need independance in life. It's irritating when people think they can call you stupid for doing something they personally don't like. It's your life, you live it, not them. If they complain, they complain. Good for them. No one cares about them.
