Why is my son strange with his underwear?

This is actually about my son -
My 12yo son is a bit strange with his underwear, he's not a fat kid, but he does have a big bum for his body, and has often had trouble with his underwear creeping up his bum. About a year ago I got him some boxer shorts but he said they were uncomfy - I suspect maybe a lack of support in front. I also tried a good brand of briefs that seemed to fit well but he says the elastic feels too tight and constricting. It seems no matter what I try he likes to wear his old underwear, but they're old cheap target undies he's had for years, I'm sure they're too small for him and I noticed the elastic is all stretched when washing them. The main problem is he is now picking at the sides of his undies constantly, while I've noticed him having trouble keeping his undies out of his bum in the past, he is now picking them out more than ever. Watching him play tennis the other day he seemed to spend every spare moment picking and tugging, and then as we walked home he couldn't go 10 sends without picking, and that was just walking. The next day I again asked him to try the other undies but he still won't wear them, I said isn't it uncomfortable but he said he still likes the old ones, and went to school picking and picking once again.
He seems to like support in front and prefers the looseness of the elastic in his old undies, but I'm not sure what to do from here. I'm also a little sensitive about talking to him about this, even though it's just underwear, it's just that he lives with me, a single mum and two sisters.

Any ideas? Any good brands?

Stop paying so much attention to your sons ass, let him figure out his underwear problem on his own. You sound like a complete psycho, you just talked about your sons underwear, picking at his butt, having a big butt for 3 paragraphs. Relax weirdo, give him 30 bucks to go buy underwear on his own and stop suffocating your kids privacy. Freaks out there these days. HES NOT 6 YEARS OLD HE'S 12. give him a break and let him figure these small problems on his own, if you keep smothering him like this he'll grow up to be an introverted wreck that depends on you for everything in his life. Do you want a 40 y/o son that lives at home and expects an allowance every week from you?

As previously suggested, go with boxer briefs and throw the old ones out. Make an excuse like you accidentally got chemicals in the wash and they were ruined or something similar. Then he has no choice but to try the boxer briefs.

  • You seem like a nice mom but I think you might want to just forget it. Sooner or later he will realize its his problem & want to do something about it. Until then, don't make it your problem.

Well, if worst comes to worst, I suggest just getting rid of the old underwear so he has no choice but to go without underwear entirely or to wear the new things until he gets used to them.
To get the elastic less rough and constricting, I'd stretch it with a few hard tugs, and then wash the underwear a couple of times without putting them in the dryer. Basically loosening up the cotton/spandex/polyester(whatever) and the elastic. If he wants support, but the regular underwear ride up, then try boxer briefs, they're longer, so less likely to bunch together when he sits down, but still tight enough for support, and if stretched enough, the spandex feels great. Hope I could help!

Maybe he doesn't need to wear underwear at all...or have you ever consider it's his pants not his undies......

I've try not wearing undies before....very comfy...you just have to pee carefully....
