It seems to me that gay men in particular value looks. I've been posting on datalounge and it seems to me like a fair shair of threads there are on looks. Plus, I've heard from a friend that looks is a must for grindr.
Is it because they are both men and men tend to see much better than they can think?

I don't think this is just a "gay" thing, looks are valued a lot by everyone, whether or not they like to spout the "Looks don't matter" Bs.
Go there and actually read the threads.
Titles include: "my cockwhore just did something to me"
"Have you ever watched your spouse's looks slip away"
"How important are looks to you?"
Etc...

Cause most men are ugly and thats also why lesbians are more common than gays...
Maybe in the gay men community. I know for a fact this is not for lesbians. I know a lot of lesbians and I have seen some what is considered beautiful lesbians with some very oddly shaped ones.
The whole American cultural mystique is built around looks. Long before gay men crawled out of the closet, Sports Illustrated had a swimsuit edition and Victoria's Secret was selling bikinis with hot young women's bodies. It's not a gay thing; it's a male thing. I can't tell from your post what your sexual orientation is, but your post comes off as a bit homophobic.
I'm not homophobic (loved yaoi) and I'm a straight female hence why I post there.
I guess I just get tired of seeing thread after thread about appearances.

All it takes to get most normal guys aroused is a picture, video or real girl within eye shot. Gals, on the other hand, are more emotional and they are stimulated by feelings, rather than by looks (other than the shallow, immature high school teeny-boppers on here).
Therefore, it's quite normal that you wouldn't understand this about guys, especially if you've not cohabited with one. Short answer; it's guys, all normal, healthy, guys. So when you do take up with a guy who says he loves you, but he can't stop looking at other girls, you can relax and believe he does love you; because he's just a guy.

I think its because gay men in general take alot of time on looking good and fashionable and expect the same standard from other gay men
Because it's common for gay men to have feminine traits, therefor they are superficial. Superficiality is a typical female trait.
I read somewhere that there's an obsession in the male gay community with the "ideal male". This concept of an ideal gay man, in terms of body, doesn't represent many in that group and consequently, there are many gay males who are developing eating disorders. This occurrence seems to be very much under looked. In fact, it was only recently that this came to my attention.
