Why is it that people hate mainstream music?

Hear me out. I'm not really the biggest fan of what's popular or "in" either? But why would you go out of the way to peg all mainstream music and say that it sucks when it's just not your type? I mean, if everyone liked the same things, it would obviously be a dull place. I remember in Spanish class, my teacher started playing some slowish, sad Tejano music, and I couldn't help but grimace. But when he asked me, "You don't like this?" I was polite enough to just say that it simply wasn't my type. Even though I'm Hispanic myself, I prefer classic rock. No feelings were hurt and there was respect for our differences. So why can't music lovers be like this and not be elitists and say that they listen to "real music" and instead accept the fact there are different strokes (heh, heh) for different folks?

Ok. Music nowadays isn't good. Period. I am a lover of everykind of music. I love classical, classic rock, r&b, motown, opera, musicals, some heavy metal, jazz, swing, ska, spanish ballads, 50's, 60's 70's 80's, 90's and some 2000 hits. I love all of the hits back in those decades. I appreciate them. But today all of music is about sex and getting their freak on on the dance floor. I have never been exposed to so much filth in my life. also everything is digitalized. there are NEVER real instruments in songs nowadays. its all pre recorded or downloaded beats or beats ripped off of another song. Song are lipsynched. Songs use technology to make their voices sound the least bit better (which doesn't work.) Thats why people hate mainstream music.

Mainstream music makes up less than 0.01% of all the music that's out there. And it's the mainstream music that's constantly shoved down everyone's throats. And to put it bluntly, mainstream music sucks. It has no soul, no substance, no emotion, no meaning and no sense of real. It comes off the assembly line like bottles of Coke...

And we're supposed to consume this crap, right?...

Mainstream music is watered down computerised crap. They get signed to a major label then some fat cunt with a cigar makes them change the songs. Underground bands kick ass because they have complete freedom and can make songs how they want without the fat bastard sticking his nose in.

If someone says a certain kind of music sucks, they have a reason for not liking it. Top 40 is full of unimaginative cookie-cutter formulaic bubble gum pop crap, and to me that sucks. Then again some music might not suck but it just might not be a person's type of music they like. So can be a difference in saying some music sucks and saying it's not your type.

Sounds like the kids who rode in mom's minivan to school because it was less conformist than the bus.

people should just listen to whatever they think sounds good (this is what I do)

who cares if it's famous or not, it's about you not about other people's music

Thank you scienthusiast28, you basically just explained it perfectly in the last part of that paragraph.

Certain Rap and Metal have the dirtiest lyrics, and that's why they are Never in the charts - DESPITE having Massive fan bases.

It's censorship. And it pisses me off.

I dunno. It depends. I hate it when some people don't let you like or dislike mainstream music. A lot of us just like the song and will like the song after it's done being popular (assuming the radio didn't kill it). Sometimes, I even like songs before they're mainstream and get pegged as a bandwagon fan...

dude, i listen to everything. it shouldn't matter what it is classified as. If it's good music (and you like listening to it), listen to it.

Some people just think that their type of music is the only good one and all others are no good.

Crap I messed up on the title, I meant LOVE mainstream music. Ugh.. And I still think its odd that millions of people have one particular taste and that only a few thousand like the rest. I mean, it might be that those people listen to the non mainstream stuff, but think its weird and keep it in the closet? Or maybe the people who DO listen to that stuff are more socially active and they are the only ones who bother to vote for those top 20 things. Give me your input people! Especially anybody who listens to mainstream stuff. Do you listen to indie/alternative stuff (FOB and My Chem are not alt they are pop punk)? If you do, do you hesitate because you don't want others to know?! Or do you not listen to other stuff, if so then what makes your music better?

Why does this happen. This is a social phenomenon, I know everybody has different musical tastes, but its crazy that the same style consistently makes the top 20 list.

I just went off again... I only meant to correct my title...

People who have had any kind of education in music could listen to a whole 'mainstream' album and not hear very much 'music' at all. Music is beautiful and creative, there are so many elements to play with...or just 2 chords, a monotone digital beat and someone singing the same 4 lines for 3 minutes. If it wasn't constantly everywhere then it would be interesting, but it gets boring. It's like we're going backwards. Even without education, I'd like to think you need to be able to play an instrument or write a song to be a musician, but what you actually need is sex appeal, good promotions and to sell yourself as a kind of brand rather than your music.

A lot of music sucks so much I cant imagine who anybody had the balls to produce it. Ive heard my drunken uncle sound better in the basement than some of these dipwads in pop culture.
But, I like Gwen Stefani Go figure.

They want to feel unique and better than people who listen to popular music. There is some good mainstream music and it's popular because it's good.

Ever heard the 4 chords song? Look it up, I think it will explain a lot. Axis of awesome - 4 chords.

Well, every single band sounds the same. I couldn't tell today's bands apart to save my life. I can't tell maroon 5, Katy Perry, or Coldplay apart. Why? They all sound alike. Nobody "sings" about a thing besides doing the nasty with umpteen people on the dance floor while snorting cocaine, then drinking a bottle of "bub" and passing out in a drunken haze. Everyone uses auto tune and can't seem to figure out what an instrument is. There was a time when musicians made music to get messages across, because they wanted to showcase their guitar or vocal skills, and because they cared about their craft. Now it's all about the Benjamins.

It's all generic. I haven't listened to the radio in a loong time.

    For example:

While I wouldn't call myself a "fan" (cause it's not my type of music), I still think that Eddie Vedder is one of few musicians left today that would still be making music even if it didn't bring him a dime or any fame whatsoever. He has a genuine passion for making music and I utterly respect that.

Artists like him used to be the only artists that existed.

The reason I hate mainstream music is because it's just the opposite. Money and fame driven. The passion aspect has totally died in these times. To me it's right up there with one of the biggest declines in society.

I agree. Mostly, I listen to Rock, Alt, Metal, Indie, etc, but every once and a while I hear a good song in the charts. How could someone NOT like "Fuck You!" by Cee Lo Green? Massive tune!
