Why is it so hard to define this decade?

I was thinking about this. How come the 1970s and 1980s were so distinct? How come the identities of those decades are so obvious, when you struggle to define the 2010s? The 2010s has absolutely nothing new to come with, unlike those decades. It's just rehash of stuff from the 50s,60s,70s, 80s and 90s, mixed into a bowl, resulting in a confused mess.

It's hard to define a decade when you're in it. I was a kid in the 90's and would have struggled to characterize that decade at the time. Now the 90's vibe seems so clear, but cultural trends just seem to bleed together when you're in the midst of them...if that makes any sense

    • To be fair, the 90s are arguably harder to define than the 70s and 80s.

Nah they really aren't. Totally distinct music, distinct fashion trends, that feeling...optimism & just total unapoligetic consumerism combined with mtv-esque superficial anger about it

Anyways, there will be a vibe to our current time that will become clear in retrospect. The only thing about current culture that makes it a little bit hard to pin down is the fact that trends cycle so quickly. Everyone has constant access to whats new in any country via the internet. Combine that with cheap disposable clothing & electronics & everything gets dumped quickly. It's interesting to see.

        • Will people in the future ever look back fondly on the 2010s in the same way as people nowadays look back on the 90s? Or will it forever be remembered as the dark era of when smartphones conquered people's minds, ISIS and Trump?

I'm sure they will find many positive things about the decade. We always do; it's a matter of confirmation bias.

Think about what you hear on classic rock stations- always great music because the vast amounts of filler dud crap has been forgotten...we tend to only recall the best & worst highlights of a time.

There's been some defining cultural trends, good & bad ones. Rise of social media, rise of environmental awareness, dawn of 3d printing, the idea of terraforming & self driving cars, first steps towards real AI...maybe they'll call this the nostalgia era because we've cycled through trnds from the 80's & 90's...eh, who knows.

I can't tell the future, (maybe there will be a pandemic & this time period will look rosy in 15 yrs) i just know a lot has changed in the past 10 years, some good, some bad. It's interesting to witness the world change.

Confused mess defines this decade perfectly. There are a lot of confused and mentally ill people around today that think fucking someone from the same sex is normal and freak shows who have their dicks and tits cut off so they can pretend they are something they aren't and never will be. Sounds like a pretty fucking confused mess to me.

Every decade looks normal when you're in it, but when you look back, it really pops out. I can think of few things when I think of the '10's; smartphones, giant eyebrows, over-diagnosing gender dysphoria, the Kardashians, Deadpool, hipsters, Miley Cyrus straddling that wrecking ball. :-P

I was listening to the radio the other day and it said, "music from the 80's, 90's, and now."
Like the 00's and 10's just got mashed together.

Yeah I also think that in the future like 20+ years like cozmo said, people will look back on the 00's and 10's and describe things we don't think about now.

You might hear things like, "Yeah back then gay marriage was a big deal! And can you believe they bickered over which restroom transgenders should use? And what about people's crazy hair colors?"
There are plenty of things to describe today's culture .

One thing that will NEVER change though - every generation saying "These kids have it easy, they are so entitled..."
I am an 80's kid and sometimes I hear MY peers say, "We were good, we listened to our parents, we worked for what we wanted...
BUUULLLLLSHIT... BULLSHIT! In the 80's us kids were just as lazy, entitled, spoiled, etc as every other generation.

  • Smartphones, tablets, VR, AI, selfdriving cars... it's the decade of smarter technology.

Gen Z kids drinking energy drinks, playing fortnight and being insanely right wing as a backlash to the feminism and transgender movements?

Saying that stuff is lit? Being a YouTube sensation?

People realising that some men are actually very good at make up and also straight?

    Living through Instagram?

    Shitty mumblerap?

I don't really know to be honest. None of this stuff sounds as good as anything that defined the 70s or the 80s.

    • Gen Z being really right-wing and rejecting feminism is a good thing though.

It's just how it goes. It's nature. One generation is really left wing, then the next is really right wing, and then the next goes back to left. Just goes in a cycle.

    • Back in the 2000s, I used to complain over how bad music was compared to the stuff from the 70s and 80s. If only I knew what was to come.

The 00's and the 10's DO feel mashed together;they seem the same to me. Also,I feel like these are the two most boring decades ever.

No, they're definitely not similar. I can easily tell the difference between these two.

      2000s: EMO
      2010s: Hipster

And the 2000s were great until about 2005, IMO.

It’s distinct to tell it from a distance, we are too close to the last few decades to have any perspective on it.

An absolute mess is how I'd define this generation.

Offended, or "triggered" by everything and angry over nothing, needing "safe places" to deal with anything in the real world.
    Obsessed with political correctness.
Freaks that chop bits off and sew others on and pretend to be the oposite sex, but fail miserably.
    Electric cars.
More interaction through social media than in person.
    Mumble rap.
    Slang that makes zero sense.
A sense of entitlement worse than any generation before it.
Feminization of men and masculinization of women.
The list goes on and on and we thought the 2000s were on a spiral downhill...

I'm not upset, just mildly annoyed.

Mostly annoyed at the wimps that get triggered, then go on about safe spaces (those sissies wouldn't 2 hours in the army) and too much social media. The rest of it doesn't really affect me, but it's annoying when you get together with your mates for a few drinks and pretty much everyone is on their phone every 3 minutes. I swear, I'm gonna start turning off my wi-fi whenever I have guests...

The only thing that does upset me is today's music... Absolutely terrible, no effort, no passion, nothing. Only modern music I look forward to are new songs made by old singers... Alice Cooper, Jeff Lynne, Abba, Asia, Pink Floyd and whoever is left of the old school giants that decide to give their aging fans one last treat.

20-30 years from now, kids will be looking at pictures and saying to their parents " Blue/green hair and tattoos? WTF were you thinking?".

Beards have always been around more or less. But good God, how could I have forgotten to mention man-buns?!?! Thankfully I think I'm seeing less of those. I think guys who wear those also like tucking their balls between their legs
