Why in america you tipping waiter?

It is not my country but I don't understand. In my country waiter makes enough to be afford own apartment in usa they say tip is add on the bills when you are dine at restaurant. Tip is rude in most europe countries include my own because you saying you need more money when waiter make enough already. But in America you tip always it's so expensive already why you tip? You spend so many money every time it is throwing money away.

Someone told me it is because waiter is not make as much money because employer pay them low than minimum wage and includes tip in salary it is almost corrupt. Is this a fact?

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

Because the US likes to treat its workers like shit, and the people in charge have managed to get the lower classes to perpetuate it all on their own.

So very true. The US is essentially a third world country. The customers pay for the workers it's absolute insanity.

As an American I have to agree with Charlies comment. Even though they are not American this is a very real truth. America likes making complain about not having enough workers while at the same making wages so low and rent so high that you literally have to have three jobs if you want to be able to rent as a single person and than if you say get those three jobs you no longer qualify for the widely accepted free obamacare. So you have to pay an additional 300 to 500 a month or be taxed at the end of the year. Its a very fucked up system and anyone who thought obamacare was a retard. As the way we define poverty by goverment standarda in US is working only part time hours and literally not able to pay rent on part time alone so you know punish the working poor till they die or are taxed into extinction. As if Americas standard of "poverty" would allow ANYONE who is auctually struggling get fucking healthcare.

It's so confusing as a foreigner in the US. The people I meet are good, kind people...but then you hear them saying these outrageous things in support of minimum wage kept below a living wage...in support of this whole paying waitstaff below minimum wage and expecting the customers to pick up the slack...of denying subsidised healthcare for reasons x, y, z, even in spite of themselves...I don't understand it. The US deserves better. All people do. But the "greatest country in the world" is so far from even the basics of a healthy society.

        Ugh. It breaks my heart.

Definitely awful. The US treats its citizens like dollar signs and slaves. That's also why it's one of the only first world countries with no mandatory vacation days either while elsewhere they get 25+ days off by law if you work any job because other countries care about their people.

They also ban more toxic foods in Europe for example than in the US because the US want the citizens sick to keep the money coming in from their medical bills and medications

The lack of universal health care is the most baffling to me. Even Brazil has an efficient system.

Well, I have to tell you they are not wrong Charlie. The way the US is set up if they raise minimum wage often the business owners cut hours or do lay offs since they state they can not afford to "Pay more workers". This also often leads to putting more work on less workers which is insanely stressful as well. So in reality its not that we DONT want a raise, its just that most of us can BARELY afford rent and if you give us a raise we probably going to be homeless and being poor in a house is better than living in a tent. That's why they defend the low minimum wage.

Fun fact: that’s total bullshit. Raising the minimum wage almost never leads to reduced hours or fewer jobs. Complete myth.

Businesses make more money when they play their employees more. Both because happier workers work better and harder, but also because happier workers are more likely to stay - and experienced workers also work better and harder. Not to mention the immeasurable benefits of affordable health care keeping everybody healthier. A group of healthy workers who have been doing their job for awhile and feel well compensated and appreciated are going to be much, much more productive than a group of ill people who hate being there and plan on leaving as soon as they either find something else or just can’t take it anymore, whichever comes first.

The nonsense about prices being increased if wages are increased is also a complete myth, for the same reasons, but also the fact that prices are already set to maximize profits. It’s based on supply and demand. If they raise the prices then fewer people will buy them and they’ll make less money.

Fun fact: You are a liar and never worked minimum wage jobs. Since company's especially small businesses will cut hours or cut workers stating this is the reasoning. If you want to argue they can pay more or not it does not change that this happens because of it. You can argue this is more the companys being "Cheapskates" but that is just kind of how it is. Companys in America want to pay the lowest amount of money for workers. So the minute you ask them to pay more they start getting rid of people and throwing work on there already underpaid/overworked staff. Stating its a lie means you never had to work a minimum wage job in your entire life and likely never had to during the pandemic since this has created a lot of problem for poor staff. Also the idea that you should keep your workers happy does not mean company's do not abuse and take advantage of their workers. My last thrift store was planning to make me manager and told us that we had to sacrifice extra time and hours without pay for the GOOD OF THE COMPANY. All while being told we could not get more than 12 dollars an hour because the company was too poor to pay overtime and how we were a family and had to help each other out. So dont be a retard, and wake up and realize the world isnt as beautiful of a sunshine world as you fucking believe you dumb ass. BE a fucking adult. Its the same reason that no one can afford housing. You do not have to charge 1500-3000 for a one bedroom. You will still be making a profit if you charge less, but America is greedy and so we cant ask them to PAY MORE MONEY without them literally fucking over there workers. Which I seen this happen to several companys or personally had this happen to myself. The companys could have likely paid us more but you know they didnt want to.

Maybe at steak and shake it sucks but you get a job at one of those upscale places where the rich people go you're gonna make good money off of tips. Also when they pay the waiters more that is passed on to the price of the food. Which is why in europe you get less food and it cost more. If you dont wanna tip just order to go and get your food cheap.

We Americans tip our hair dressers, our dry cleaners, our movers, our mechanics, our trash collectors, our mail people, our uber drivers, our door people, our lawn people. We tip everyone and you foreign fucks love it when we spread the generosity in your country. It is a weird thing that servers in restaurants rely on almost only tips. It is great when you work at a high end place that isn't frequented by Euros, but does suck for the folks that are diner lifers.

Instead of donating to charity I make sure I always tip really well. That way its going to your own people in your own community and not some lazy dude that doesnt wanna work. Thats how I give back. It actually feels pretty good.

The thing about upscale restaurants is there's a ton of requirements for you to be hired. Not every American is blessed with the qualities they expect from a server or host in those places. It depends on how attractive you are, how worldly, how knowledgeable about food and fancy shit you are. Easier said than done. I worked at a place like that and I was amazed at how every hiree was good looking and well-versed. Now, the bussing and kitchen staff positions were reserved for Mexicans, Venezuelans, Peruvian, Polish and (supposedly) less cultured Americans...

I am American and I tip generously because I know people starve and go without shelter without tips, because of unlivable wages allowed, but I'm also annoyed af that the consumer is taking on the burden of paying an employee that is Not theirs WTF is that? Charli said it very well. This is a very frustrating problem to be in the middle of and yes the poorest of Americans vote and support Politicians that keep this status quo on a large enough scale

Minimum wage is lower for waiters and delivery drivers, yes. I don't like the fact that some depend on tips to survive, or feed their kids. I do wish the regular minimum wage applied for them.

There's several histories to it, but from my understanding it especially picked up during the Great Depression when business owners could not guarantee salaries for their workers. Afterwards it never quite went away as tradition. Depending on the state, it can either be pretty rad or you're more fucked by it because local laws allow employers to pay you below minimum wage if you get tips. I'm lucky enough to live in a state where you must pay people fully salary in addition to their tips.

We tip service workers because the government says it legally ok to pay those employees under minimum wage. knowing that the customers will (probably) feel bad for the underpaid servers, we will tip them for their excellent service.

Its basically a way for the government to get away with underpaying a set of employees and not break the law.

It is in our *american culture* to show extra gratitude of a service well done by giving extra money

Tipping culture in america is generally related to the quality of the service jobs. It's to incentivize better labor. Or at least that's how it started as. That being said if you asked a handful of waiters if they would perfer tipping to getting a decent wage the majority would perfer the tipping.
During certain nights you could pull an unexpected 300+ dollar haul.

There is a difference between a TIP and a gratuity. Originally a TIP meant "To Insure Promptness" and it was offered at the beginning, to the maître d, as an incentive for the staff to provide quick and good service. The gratuity is offered as a reward for good service at the end before you leave. But the meanings got morphed into what it is today. Besides, you rarely, if ever see a maître d anymore.

Waiters and waitresses don't make nearly as much hourly as other employees. Some, at least in the past, have made way less than minimum wage. I think some may have had no hourly pay at all, and would rely entirely on tips, but I may be wrong.
