Why does food service in these places suck so bad? iin?

- Schools
- Restaurants
- Planes
and
- Hospitals

Every place should atleast serve decent food. There should be a "Good Food 4 America" Movement.

PS: I'm American myself.

Go to better quality restaurants; not all restaurants are like McDonald's.
Fly first class, that food is pretty good.
Bring your own food if you don't like what they serve on campus.
Hospitals aren't really places people go for fine food. They serve food based on a patient's dietary needs, not palate. Don't you think American hospitals are expensive enough without adding the cost of gourmet cuisine?

    • It doesn't have to be gourmet food. Just good.

Why? Nobody in their right mind wants to give anyone an excuse to stay in a hospital.

        • It would be done just to give good service while they wait to be discharged.

Spend MY money on good doctors and nurses, NOT fucking cooks, for crying out loud. Are you nuts?

            • Nope. I just believe in good food service every where it's served. I'm sure that if you had to be in the hospital for a long time and you couldn't leave, you would want something tasty to eat too, right?

The food sucks because no one cares.

I've been told at places I worked that had cooked food and salad bar not to complain about it when it was bad (always) because, "those people don't make very much money and we don't want them to quit."

Also, Americans don't want good food, you can tell by looking at most of them that they'll eat nearly anything. Just the existence of Taco Bell proves this.

I agree with this completely. Quantity, speed, convince, and price are all valued well above quality. The market is just catering to what the public is buying.

They serve shitty food because in those places they know that your trapped and that they can serve you any old piece of shit on a plate and know you'll eat it. Since they're aware of that, they cut costs on food and hire cheap labor while over charging the living shit out of the customer. It's really disturbing because schools and hospitals are the types of places where it's important that the people eating be fed a decent meal.

Because there is no competition. Restaurants are the exception.

I agree with couman. Restaurants doesn't belong in that list. All other places, food is supplementary to the business' main purpose, and so it's normal for the food quality to be below par. I don't know if anyone would consider food quality when picking a hospital or school. And so it's sort of justified for those places to have sucky food

I agree with you reasoning, but I draw the complete opposite conclusion from it. It makes me believe that the OP should take everything else off the list and just say restaurants. Because if the other places really aren't expected to provide great food in the first place, than there isn't really much of a question as to why they aren't doing so.

But restaurants are in the food business. There is an expectation that they will provide adequate to quality food and atmosphere. So if they are not doing so, I think it is completely valid to ask why.

Isolating restaurants from the other 3 works too, but then the question "Why don't all restaurants have decent food" is not a worthy argument because of the exact 4 things you mentioned in another comment "quantity, speed, convenience, price." This doesn't justify any place to serve shitty food, but it helps to understand that the reason they exist is evidence that 1) Someone likes the taste or 2) It is what the consumer can afford.

Perhaps... there could be a "movement" where experts made trips to as many restaurants, in an effort to educate cooks or improve foods/recipes. But then you have to define decent food, is it food that merely tastes good or is actually healthy, or both? Only the first of these 3 definitions is unlikely to meddle with the restaurant's budget. Who'll be funding the movement? Would enough people actually even care? Long story short, there will always be a market for inadequate tasting food.

"Why don't all restaurants have decent food" is not a worthy argument because it is not an argument at all, it is a question. Just because I previously answered it doesn't make it a bad question. Obviously I agree with your second paragraph as it was the entire point of the previous comment of mine that you are referring to.
