Why does america and the u.k insist on using their own system?

Like the title says, why on earth would you go on using a system thats so ridiculously inconsistent and overly complicated when there's a perfectly good system for measurements used by THE REST OF THE WORLD called the metric system.

I'm just curious, it always puzzled me.

Um. The UK uses the metric system.

  • Because we're American. We just have to be different about everything.

    Why switch?
ITS ALL A SCAM so they can sell more tools.
USA was "supposed" to switch to metric but never did.
Computer standards will force us to use metric someday.

  • It was a freedom thing, America was a new place and everything had to be fresh and exciting

  • Yeah, uk is on metric. And the us probably because if it's high population? Too many people to change. I am Canadian and I dint understand Americans AT ALL! :l

  • Right, but being different just for the sake of being different seem a little backwards to me. Of course you have your own set of ideals, every nation does and I'm not challenging those at all.

I'm merely curious as to why you're still using an obsolete system for measurements. It's only used in the U.S, Burma and Liberia as far as I know.

I guess the enormous cost of switching is one reason, replacing/adjusting billions of dollars worth of industrial equipment and so on. Oh well, 'nuff said.

If we don't feel a need to switch, we never will. America was founded by people who wanted to be different; to have our own set of ideals.

personally, rendering thousands of dollars of tools in my garage useless is enough for me. i suppose in industry, it might be the same thing. the states have talked about the metric conversion for decades and decades, yet nothing seems to come of it.

  • My bad, the Brits do indeed use the metric system for the most part. In my defense though the "old" system is still used for various things, like road signs (miles, yards, mph), certain products (pints, ounces), weight (stones, pounds).

  • I hate the American system, but the British do use the metric system. I don't know why you think they don't.

    • Hm, even though that wasn't the most elaborate or clever explanation I've read it did actually answer my question.

Just the idea of sticking with your own ways and systems, especially one as important as this, when the rest of the world is becoming more and more uniform and globalized is fascinating for lack of a better word.

And no, I'm not being sarcastic. I truly do find it fascinating how unique and weird (in a good way) the U.S really is.

      Case closed!
