Why do we like sad movies and stories?

When we watch and read stuff that makes us cry, why do we like it (especially if it ends on a good-note)? What's up with that?

I cried while watching the film The Impossible starring Ewan McGregor based upon a true story of when the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami struck in the Indian Oceane. I felt my eyes well up with tears very quickly and was incredibly emotional as the storyline really moved me so much.

I believe it's uplifting in a way. It makes us feel better, like wow, my day sucks but if it turned out well for him, maybe it will for us. The tears come because we identify with something which makes it more personal and therefor more easy to think "maybe it'll work out for me if it did for him"

I don't. I just like bloody movies where people die. It's always fun and makes me laugh.

It allows us to experiance things that can make us sad with out the real life fallout(like having to live with it). And we like the happy end because we like to feel there's a hope for a better tomarrow.
