Why do we feel more upset after watching a scene a second time

So my cousin brother who is around 10 watched UP for the first time and during the emotional scenes with Carl and his deceased wife my cousin didnt cry or anything but did feel a little sad. After watching it a second time he fully broke down in tears during the same scene though, so my question is how come it was fine the first time and mega tears the second? Btw he hasnt lost any family member or anything and i dont think its the fear of it that is causing it either, what do you think?

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

When you watch a movie for the first time, especially if you're not paying enough attention, a lot of things fly by. You still take in info, but you gloss over some details.

But when you rewatch the same move, you focus more on the details. You understand more. Anyway, the beginning of UP is a massive cry-fest. It's very relatable to many people. Me included. This was my grandmother's life after loosing my grandfather. She was never the same. So seeing that scene in UP, just made me burst into tears, reminding me of something I've experienced first hand.

Pixar are masters of manipulating our feelings and emotions beautifully.

I think the second time you understand it better and can take more of it in. The first time I watch a movie I'm concentrating on the plot and 'what's happening with whom' and I don't have much headspace left to pay attention to the music, shot angle and composition, costume, setting, etc. And the words just fly past the first time - the second time you can think about what they mean.

Also if you've seen the film to the end, you can situate the scene better in the plot, firstly because you have a better grasp of the plot and also because you know how the film ends, so the sad scene makes more sense. You just have a better grasp of the film all-round. Think of all those millions of dollars that are put into films... there is surely a limit to what a person can take in and process in a single viewing.
