Why do we, as human beings, feel the need to tell someone our secrets?

We all have secrets, something we wouldn't want anybody to know about. Yet everybody i've met including myself would always want to share their secrets with somebody whether it be their parents, siblings, lovers, best friends etc even with the risk of it being told to someone else. There are some secrets which you absolutely wouldn't want anybody to know about yet you still would want to talk to someone about it. I mean isn't that the entire reason why this website was made? i just wonna know why. why do we, as human beings want to talk to somebody about our secrets even though we actually don't want people around us to know about it. Can anybody here who knows and thing or two about psychology enlighten me?

Good question... It seems it's just a relief. Holding secrets can become pretty stressful. Telling someone out loud helps put it in perspective.

I agree with this comment. Actually, there's a lot of people out there who do NOT share their secrets and they're perfectly OK with it...Intelligence people, murderers, pedophiles, spouse cheaters, etc. I think the need to share is nothing more than diluting the personal stress of holding a secret.

Another reason is sometimes to alleviate ones own guilt.

we are social animals. we need to communicate with each other, and we tell secrets because it feels good to expose them and we love hearing them from others!

I think lots of people come to this site to tell their secret because :
    They need advice or
they like to know they're not the only ones with that problem (secret)
