Why do stores sell things for $9.99 instead of $10.00?

Confused asfk .. are they playing mind games with us?

because 9.99 has the number 666 and all businessmen worship satan in the local masonic temple. It wouldn't work with 1000 would it? Lucifer number.

  • To make you think it’s cheaper when it’s not.

Yes they are playing mind games. It's called marketing.

  • I asked my mom the same question when I was 6 or so. I believe it's because they want to create the illusion of a cheaper product.

It might work on someone who isn't paying attention, who's just looking at the first number- "9,9,9? 9 dollars?"

It's never worked on me; I count my cents carefully.

I've read somewhere (probably misread the damn thing so take this with a pinch of salt) that is give the illusion to a customer that something is cheaper even if it is only a cent cheaper.

And another reason I have read somewhere is that it is a loss prevention practice to force the cashier to run a sale thru the cash register to give chance thus less change they would just pocket the cash.

Your first paragraph is spot on, but in the case of the second one, we haven't had 1 or 2 cent coins in Australia for decades and lots of stuff is still priced with .99 at the end. If I'm buying one item I sometimes jokingly ask for the 1c change because of course it always gets rounded up to the full $ amount.

Yeah we ceased making 1 and 2 cent pieces here in New Zealand since the early 90s.

I would always pay in EFTPOS to pay the exact amount when I pay for something that ends with 99 cents - yeah it might be only a cent but it does add up.

Yep, I pay all my bills either online or with my debit card: never worked out how much I'm saving because they're not rounded up though.

Do you have $1 and $2 coins in NZ? I hated them when they were first introduced but found them a really easy way of saving if I drop them all into a jar whenever I've been shopping.

There's been talk here in Aus of phasing out 5, 10 and 20c pieces which I do object to because of the price rise factor.

We do. Our 2 dollar coins is slightly larger than your 1 dollar coin and our $2 dollar coin is around the same size as your 10 cent coin. I just didn't understand why you folks have the $2 coin smaller than the $1.

We phrased out the 5 cent piece back in 2006 and our existing coinage was redesigned to be smaller. They were the same size as your coinage with the exception of the dollar coins (mentioned above) and the 50 cent piece which was circular. So to give you an idea, our 50 cent piece is now the size of your 10 cent piece.

I've always wondered that, why things always cost like $34.49, or $19.99, or $5.89, etc. Why haven't people just made prices more rounded off like $35.50, $20, or $5.90? I doknow, the price always changes again anyway when you pay for it because of tax. When I went to the UK, I noticed that you don't pay tax for things you buy, the price tag displays the exact amount that you pay.

You always pay tax. It's just built into the price.

I knew that's true here in America that you always have to pay tax. I guess in England, the tax is included into the display price instead of it being added on while checking it out at the register like it is here.

Because to the purchaser the amount that registers is the 9 and not the fact that it's really $10

Right and it's the main reason they still make the penny. It costs 1.66 cents to make one cent. But the retailers lobby against doing away with the penny every time they propose doing away with it. The treasury would save billions if they just rounded things off but people love the penny. Especially the retailers.

Ben Franklin said a penny saved is a penny earned over 200 years ago. Back then though, there were alot of things which costed only one of two pennies. A piece of candy was 1¢, an ice cream cone was 2¢, a meal at a restaurant was 5¢ or 6¢. Pennies were alot more valuable

I remember reading like 20 years ago how the American government may discontinue pennies. I wonder if they still eventually will.

We don't have pennies or one or two piece cent coins in Australia: see my earlier post

It's a trick to make idiots think they are buying something cheaper...
You'd be amazed how many people would buy something for 99.99, instead of 100.00 USD... Personally I think it's annoying cause you slowly gather pennies and have no real use for them.
So you keep collecting them, until you have a shoe box full of pennies and take it to the bank to get a few bucks. Again wasted time.

I once saved a huge jug of pennies for a couple of years, I got almost $50 when exchanging them.

Same reason they sell gas for $2.64.9. Sounds better than $2.65 even though it's just a tenth of a penny less.
