Why do some people say 'could care less?'

They should be saying 'couldn't care less.' Can you learn this and stop doing it the wrong way.

  • Maybe they could be more apathetic than they are.

It seems to be an American thing, the reasoning I can't fathom either.

It annoys me too. It doesn't make sense. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think it's an American thing.

I for one, couldn't care less about this post.

Same reason they say could of, would of, etc and then instead of than, and switch around men/man and women/woman.

    Because they're dumb.

It is very annoying (but also funny if you choose to look at the bright side) when people just learn expressions without understanding their meaning and they just say them as they sound.

        • Thanks that was interesting. So basically it was wrong but because so many people are saying it it's become accepted as an illogical idiom.

I read this as someone trying to justify its use. Why not say "I could care one shilling of a refrigerator door in a tiny wooden box less". It's an idiom so it doesn't have to be logical right?

You may use that... good luck in getting it so popular that it will be used by a large amount of people^^

          • Saying "believe you me" doesn't really make sense when you think about the words but yet people say it and it's accepted as perfectly good English.

Well you are the one posting that people are saying thr phrase wrong, so I don't really know why your telling me this. But I don't see the comparison between the saying you are complaining about in your post. The words "believe you me" might not be the best use of the English language, but they make sense. The person is telling "you" to believe "me".

As you stated in your original post "couldn't" makes far more sence than "could" in this particular phrase. Also, phrase with "couldn't" as you prefer it is more popular. But again, it is your post so I don't know why you are telling me this.

I am not sure what you mean "can you learn this and stop doing it the wrong way " what does this mean exactly?

    • That it's 'couldn't care less' not 'could care less.'
