Why do so few americans have a passport

Why do so few Americans have a passport? I believe somewhere in the 30% of Americans have a passport.

    Non American here.

This is my take on this phenomena.

First of all, the United States of America is fairly large country with a vast landscape of terrain, landscapes and climates so it gives you an excellent array of different sights to visit. You could find yourself in the wetlands of Florida to the dry deserts of New Mexico. You can do this without the need of a passport.

And from my understanding Americans do not have as much vacation time but they sure make it up with their holidays. From experience, they do appreciate what vacation time they have and for them it is quality over quantity.

was gonna say basically the first thing you said but didnt know how to without sounding..what, ethnocentric? I am american and been to most european countries and of course canada, there's not much to see unless you're into history/buildings, cities and that sort of thing,or if you have family there it's nice to visit them..Im more into the nature and there's plenty of cool sites in the states. i would've also guessed that a large majority of americans can't afford much travel

They were all secretly born in Kenya and can't produce a valid birth certificate.

Another thing to mention is a large amount of Americans simply can't AFFORD traveling to another country. A lot of us don't even leave their own state all that often.

I use my passport entirely for business trips, and long weekends in the Caribbean. Basically, the rest of the world sucks.

I have absolutely no need for one so why would I go through the hassle and expense of getting one?

Same here. If work or something takes me out of the country then I'll get one.

Why is having a passport so important? You don't have to leave the US to have a great time. That is why so many people come here from other countries.

  • Probably habit to get one in Europe. Prior to 1993 (formation of the EU) Europeans needed a passport to visit any country that is now part of the EU. A passport was never needed to travel within the USA which has about the same landmass as all of Europe. The EU did create an open border problem though, so things may change.

the Best food and cleanest accommodations are in the USA. we are happy with our own landscapes. we have it all. BTW i lived 8 of my first 16 years in europe. No , i would not visit europe if it were free. but feel free to visit us and spend all you money , just dont stay. our citizens need our jobs. You can fix your country if you dont like it. And do try to stay off the no fly list, if you know what i mean.
