Why do people straighten their hair? is it normal to want "good" hair?

I am a biracial female with very curly hair. My mother began to relax my hair when I was 7 years old. I contitnued to chemically straighten my hair until I was 14. I noticed that the chemicals were thinning out my hair and making it dry. It eventually thinned out so much I had to cut it off. I finally thought about my hair situation one day. Why was I going through hell just to have straight hair? Why was it soooo important that I had to change the texture of my hair just to be perceived differently. I decided to grow out my natural hair and it was the best decision I have ever made in my life. It is so healthy and curly and strong and beautiful! So, is it normal to want straight hair??

  • It's your hair, do what you want with it. I like curly hair, too many people nowadays have straight hair and it's getting boring.

By "biracial" I assume u mean white and black. Do you have a lot of "white" physical characteristics - for example, is the texture of ur hair "white" even though it's really curly? If so, don't straighten it, I am alway jealous of girls with that type of hair.

But really do what u want.

Just because you prefer your curly natural hair doesn't mean that everybody has to let their hair grow natural. Each decide what's best for him/her
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder

  • Because it's socially predicative that lighter skin and straight hair is more manageable and attractive, not speaking for everyone of coarse.

Hello. I am African American. Like most Africans brought to the Americas through the slave trade, I have other races in my genetic makeup. However, I prefer to identify primarily with my African heritage. My hair is very coarse, thick, kinky, and unmanageable without a relaxer. My experience with relaxing my hair has actually been the opposite of yours. I have been able to maintain a thick, healthy head of hair and to grow it mid-way down my back. And, yes, it is all my actual hair. I am guessing that your hair was not relaxed properly by someone who didn't know what they were doing? I don't recommend relaxers for all types of hair. However, all races of women do have their hair relaxed. Relaxing hair has nothing to do with having self esteem issues. It's just a hairstyle.

I'm mixed (black, white, Venezuelan, porteugese) and I've straightened my hair using the Japanese perm straight and it damaged my hair to the point where I couldn't even really enjoy it. I just finished cutting off the last of the straightened hair and looking forward to figuring out what to do with my natural hair.

It's a process but hopefully I'll figure it out and feel as beautiful as you do...

  • My mother is Spanish and my father is Jamaican =) The texture of my hair is REALLY weird. Sometimes it is soft like my mom's hair and sometimes it is coarse and frizzy like my father's hair but over all it is a curly jungle up there!

I just see alot of black women spend hundrends of dollars for flat irons and chemical treatments and fake straight hair. Why? I think all hair is beautiful.
