People don't NEED to, they WANT to. It's a result of insecurity. I would be insulted if someone told me I was normal, and I wouldn't find their opinion very valuable as they would be wrong.

Many things in life require one to be normal, namely getting a job. You don't have to feel normal you just have to convince others that you are.

Not always. I am employed precisely because I'm weird as fuck. I just had a conversation with a customer where I joked that I spend my days off as a volunteer at a clinic removing men's pubic hair with pliers. This all happened right in front of one of my bosses and he laughed too.

My customers come to me (there are other employees they could deal with) because I'm off the wall, and have virtually no filter. Life is awesome.

Well, That is where it gets subjective. I would say 'normal' at its very lowest limit, is somewhere along the original post's 3a definition. So you can make jokes like that, as long as your boss sees you are fit in every other requirement.

Actually when we want to be normal, we don't mean it literally. It's rather we are asking if what's happening is called for.
