Why do people like rap/hip hop/country?

I am a psychology student, and perspective has always bothered me. Why can people tolerate and even enjoy this music? How can this garbage possibly speak to people? Talentless people are getting rich and famous from making crap. Why is this allowed? Is it normal for me to not understand this?

Part of psychology is to put yourself into the clients shoes and to NOT judge them.

Another part of psychology is acceptance.

By calling their music 'garbage' by 'talentless' performers is immature and makes you sound as if you have anger & acceptance issues.

In a nutshell, it seems to me as if you are saying it is wrong to enjoy this music and that others should adhere to what you enjoy.

Look at their side of the story: They may not like Led Zeppelin's loud guitar sound or the pop of Madonna of Britney Spears.

Is it normal to look down upon other people's music? I would say yes, it is. Is it RIGHT? NO.

Talk to your professors, they will help you along the path towards acceptance other other peoples thoughts and also in the teaching of empathy.

Honestly, the first couple of comments are right - it is a culutral thing or can be used as just to 'fit in.' I do like rap, but I'm usually only drawn to rappers who have ACTUAL lyrics and have real beats and can ACTUALLY rap. I do not find "shaking her ass in those jeans" at all attractive nor a good thing to listen to.

So normal. Understanding What others like means you have to step out of your shoes (put emotions, judgements, and everything else aside). This is very hard for many people to do. You are a very normal person.

I was going to tell you to get off your highhorse (and that I could never stand getting therapy from a person like you), but then I just got this huge smile on my face.
I love your superiority complex as much as some 15 year old kid that wants to be a vampire.
We are all just too amazing!

There is a place for everything. Just because you don't agree with it doesn't make it 'wrong'. If we all listened to the same music and thought the same way, it would be a very boring world. Celebrate diversity rather than bitching about it.

Hold up hold up hold up. I agree on the hip hop/rap thing, especially everything after biggie died. but country? Dude. I know modern country kinda sucks but what about George Strait? Garth? Patsy Cline? Etc?
Then, of course there's the concern that someone who is utterly incapable of empathy is a psychology student. You should become a business major. Business school is full of sociopaths like you who don't know how to understand people and just see them as a means to make money. plus it's not eight plus years long!
I guess you're just a little snobby. I understand. So am I. But snobs shouldn't be psychologists. Reevaluate your goals and reasons, buddy.

Country Music requires a lot of talent, I believe, unlike cRap. Like John Williams, John Denver and Willy Nelson (OMG)!! I am being very indicative of the Vocal abilities (compared to cRap) of Country artists!

Take it however you like but you know that crap and yep I know that's just my opinion but, i's really making me dislike black people lately.
The voices, lyrics, all the same bs and film clips with some in your face f'r blurting out the crap while he does the finger and hand moves at the camera , dragging up the crotch in his loose pants and 30 or 40 paid chicks dancing around him in tiny outfits.

I hate the shit and I get so sick of those monotone voices everyone uses through it. Unfortunately even if you can't f'n sing now you can still get a deal.

Music helps people. It sounds good to people. If you don't like those kinds find another. People have different interests

  • Rap and hip hop nowadays is terrible; all about getting low or getting back up, sex money and what I have that you don't... But the core essence of rap is to speak a message. Old rap from back then had meaning, but few do now. Yes, it may be vulgar, but rap is a more "fierce" way to instill a point. For instance, Lil Kim explores gender roles in a rather explicit song called "Suck My D*ck"... Sounds like a sexual song, no? But within it laid many messages, and also invoked female empowerment. Of course, it does so in a rough manner, but the tone is part of the technique. If someone was to write a simple message on paper, it would stick not stick as easy. The style of execution is important. Also, the language is spoken in a way the intended audience would understand. Teens swear a lot, and although it's wrong, you have to speak their language to get the point across. However, all this is just one or two interpretations. There are many other reasons why hip hop and country is listened to. Personally, I have no country on my iPod nor do I look it up, but when it comes on, I actually like it. It's soothing and feels comforting, and some ballads are really nice. Different people like different things. And the thing about culture... Yes lots of teens are easy targets... Make some crap rap and they'll pay for it if it makes them look cook... I suggest you stay away from mainstream.

Country is relatable for me, and when I listen to it it almost triggers a nostalgia-like effect. If you've never experienced what they're talking about, you wouldn't understand. But it's the best feeling.

everybody has different intrests, besides it wouldent be normal if we all liked the same thing, its because we are different, thats what makes us all normal:)

Erm, what perspective are you referring to?

I agree with what Ollieo has said.

Since you're a psychology student, I suggest that you read up on how the human brain reacts to music. It's facinating. Try a book called "This is Your Brain on Music" by Daniel Levitin. That book will help you understand more about why people appreciate certain types of music whereas others don't care for it.

I understand your anger at how people with no ral talent can become rich and famous and yet people who are amazingly talented can go unnoticed, but don't come down on a genre just because you don't appreciate it!

  • What's to understand? People like it and buy it. Commercial music is a business. And people will buy all kinds of stuff. Its not about what they will tolerate, but perhaps it is about you being tolerant. I don't think it is fair of you to outright dismiss all these genres. There is good music in each & not so good; even though none may be what you like. I do think developing a critical appreciation of music is important, but mainly for your own purposes. Not to judge other people with.

People are defined by their art and their preferences.

There's ALOT to understand, and I can tell you right now, anyone that posesses any true dedication to music and/or has studied it, does not tolerate modern mainstream music.

There is no 'good' country, or 'good' pop music. What exactly is it that you judge people on, Ollieo? It is a fact that musicians are successful in all areas of their life, and I guarantee you there is no criminal or delinquent person in existence with true talent.

There are good people and bad people. Bad people allow themselves to be inspired by garbage. Bottom line is, these people are a plague on culture and.

  • As a fellow Phycology Student (Phycology in the workplace, two terms ago.) I would often ask myself questions like this. The best answer I came up with, is that it is a cultural thing.

My fiance loves country and when I started "acting" like I'm okay with it, now that is all we listen to while driving. I honstly don't like it and I cannot stand Rap or Hip Hop more.

I feel the same way about text messages and other common things young people do that are counterproductive. Yes, a song about "slappen whores" or "shooting a g"-whatever the fuck that means MAY be entertaining to SOME but when I am driving in my beater truck down the road, I do not want to hear your speakers or see you being enthused about it. I do not GIVE A SHIT how loud your stereo can produce a "beat" and I do not want to hear it.

This goes when I am sleeping in after a long night of studying or spending quiet time watching whatever crappy movie Bethany picked out.

I feel the same way about idiots who write crap instead of common English in their college writing, emails and THIS SITE. Please for the love of god, please write better and make yourself appear more credible and intelligent.
    ------------------------------

I think the things like offensive rap music or writing like a moron is rather counterproductive. Yes, it is real great that you understand what "S8t 2 da mall" means but it won't help you in a real life job or a college paper. It is also real nice that you like various crap music but please understand that people like me DO find it offensive and please don't make us listen to it with you.

Also, if you write or listen to more "professional" music, it helps prepare you for a more successful life. Isn't the true goal of those who work to have a decent career and not serve burgers at McDonalds? Living life in a more formal and professional manner will help you get used to it more easily when you need to.

    • Damn, I didn't state my point. I think people are drawn to these things because it is more of a cultural thing. Idiots are drawn to rap, YES, I SAID IDIOTS, because it is what they know as those who are around them also enjoy it and want to be "different."

I believe it is the same with Hip Hop and Country, the people who listen to this follow these music as they grew up with it and it is what they LEARNED to like. (We all LEARN to like the things we know from experiences, personal taste and those taste of those they like.)

People follow what they know and that is why country, although rather OLD, is still popular in rural areas and around farmers in general. There are exceptions (My parents like Hip Hop and I won't listen to it possibly out of my joy of striving to be better than them.)

The thing is that I was raised with a little bit of country. My parents listened to it, and regardless, I still can't stand it. It just sounds horrible. Realizations like these lead me to other thoughts, and eventually to the discovery that the masses are stupid, the masses are ignorant, and the masses run the world. Democracy is a joke and Hitler a political genius, albeit an incompetent military leader. Now in another story on this website, I made it clear that I feel it necessary to accept and try to understand the feeble minded, specifically religious folks. The ironic thing is, stupid people are trying to associate themselves with hatreds for things that are also stupid, in order to take away from the inevitable realization that THEY ARE STUPID. Honesty and good ol' fashioned BEING CORRECT are slowly becoming either extinct, or worse, obselete. The world's been getting worse, not better. And really, I wasn't expecting a post like yours.

i wuz xpectin sum white guy wit a trucker hat on who types lik dis to further my point by disagreeing with it. You have done the opposite and the same, all in one. So I applaud your very well thought out and intelligent response, and I hope you accept what I believe to be a proper response as a thank-you.

Colloquialism =/= culture. But the people that need to hear this probably haven't a clue and/or do not own a dictionary. Irony atop irony. Just die, 90%% of the world. Just die.

  • Lastly, do you really think a manager for a professional and serious company will tolerate random "stupidity" or your inability to write right because you were lazy. Please use THIS time to practice and get better.
