Why do most people hate mentally ill people?

I'm not talking about minor illnesses like depression, I'm talking about schizoid, psychosis, depersonalization disorder, anxiety, etc.

Whenever people hear about these illlnesses, they often associate them with violent, murderous people who go around shooting everyone.

Now I'm not saying that people with these illneses never have violent thoughts or lash out, but with proper care and medication, these people are able to live their lives more normally.

I hate the stigma that if you have some sort of illnesses that makes you violent, you're unpredictable and have most likely killed one hundred children.

I have depersonalization disorder and bpd, and I'll admit I do have violent thoughts on occasion, but I never act upon them. I fear when I tell people about my illness that they will treat me differently or think I should be in an asylum. This is why I rarely talk about them anymore.

I understand that there ARE some people who are completely out of control and must be detained for the safety of the public, but that does not mean everyone with that illnesses is bloodthirsty and out to get you.

Say if a white man were to kill someone, does that mean all white men are murderers or want to kill people? No, it does not.

I just wish mentally ill people were treated a little better, than everyone wanting to eradicate them from existence.

I don't think most people 'hate' the mentally ill. I think most people are uncomfortable in their presence because they don't know how to act around them, and don't understand them.
Obviously you can't treat them the same as other people, because they are NOT like most people.

Most people don't want to deal with the burden mental illness tends to bring to the table. It sucks for both parties, but it's understandable.

Borderline personality disorder has a huge stigma, and often times leads to people being misdiagnosed as Bipolar.

Anxiety is nowhere near as serious as schizoid or psychosis, you need to do some more research.

I don't hate the mentally ill, I just don't see the point of keeping them alive. We humans are only surviving due to our superior minds and intellect, so if one's mind isn't working properly and can't be fixed, then they have no reason to exist.

Also, lunatics can be danger to people. It's best keeping them locked up so they can't hurt innocent people.

Hahahahaha superior minds! Really? Do you understand what the word hate means? Because saying that you want to wipe out a group of people, based on your own ignorance, is pretty much the definition. You are the very model of ignorance. Also just so you know "lunatic" is not a word people haven't used since the 40s, clearly you need to do some more research.

What if it turned out your desire to see mentally ill people "not be kept alive," makes you mentally ill? What should be done with you then?

Well, it doesn't make me mentally ill, so it's kind of a stupid point to make, but, based on my stance, I would be eliminated.

I wouldn't reason with him. One who thinks genocide is a good idea is clearly off his head. Maybe psychopath is a more apt term?

Does this include people with depression, anxiety, eating disorders, schizophrenia etc?

    • What about people with autism/aspergers? I'm talking about the higher spectrum, people that have these are usually more intelligent then an average person, they should be kept alive.

It's not a mental illness. It's a mild social disorder, and yes, they're completely fine.

I have anxiety and bi polar disorder. I only want to kill people who make posts about it on websites like this.

Only thing I dislike is the depression bandwagon that every bored 1st world brainless teen / immature adult jumps on in a last ditch effort to look for attention.

  • I have bipolar disorder and I've always been afraid to talk about it with people. They always jump to the worse possible conclusions about it. They assume that I am a mental case up and down. Here recently I've become way more comfortable with it and the more people that can be educated the less of a stigma. I know I might only be changing a few minds. But that's a few minds changed and when the next person they come across that is diagnosed with a mental illness they might not be so judgemental and more understanding.

I think within five minutes anyone is paying attention when you realize your mental :)

But I'm happy you don't feel a huge stigma anymore
