Why do most nerds fit the stereotype?

I was just thinking about it , why do almost all nerds actually look the way they do. Is there a reason why the *smartest* people look so *unattractive*? I know there are smart people who are beautiful and athletic and all that, but why do the majority of people interested in stuff like Star-wars and computers, etc. all have glasses, and just look so uncool?

cause when they have the brains they know that being a slave of fashion and of what other people think is just such a nobrain thing to do. It's much cooler to not give a damn and to wear whatever you want regardless of what other people say about you. So respect to the nerds.

A person is a nerd because they fit the stereotype. Hence nerds fit the stereo type. If a person wasn't smart and unnactractive, you wouldn't consider them a nerd. Thats why every person you consider a nerd is smart and unattractive. If they weren't, you wouldn't consider them to be a nerd.

  • Nerds may miss out while at highschool or college but they make up for it later with high paying jobs and a woman later in life

totally agree!! i married an I.T manager. he makes a ton of money. not important, but im not complaining either!

Probably because most of the attractive people are out doing other, less important, things while the nerds are busy learning.

nerds are the ones who grow up and make all the money. na dhave real jobs. unlike the attractive "perfect" ppl in high school. they are more worried about looks and material things at that age. which, when you grow up, you find out really arent that important. i married a "geek" but hes attractive. but thats not what attracted me to him. he has a great sense of humor and treats me like a princess. i'd rather have that that the "has been" jock. im really happy! but im 32 now. so , been there. done that.

Because the only nerds you pay attention to are the ones that fit the stereotype. Also, it's a stereotype for a reason.

the reason you think most nerds fit the stereotype is because you only know what they look like.

Respect the nerds, they may seem like losers now, but they'll most likely be making it big later in life. More power to them for being able to get through high school in the hard way they do

because unlike most ppl they dont really give a dam about what other ppl think (if they do they dont show it lol)...in a way thats coolness, only with glasses and wookiees instead of leather jackets and bikes.

    Peace jah bless

You cant catogarize nerds though, there are Genius lke Erdos (hugarian mathematician) who never had sex and were really weird. But there are also geniuses of equal mental ability like Descartes or Heisenburg who were 'players'. I think a higher propotion of smart people find socializing difficult because they think 9a bit like me) society is dumb and a bit ridiculous. Myself I never, ever dance because I think its stupid and there's no reason for it, but I;m not a genius. You get funny, attractive, genius/nerds and alo some nerds that can't relate to other people.

Most likely because they have other important things to worry about. I'm pretty nerdy myself but I certainly don't look like it. I only dress nicely because it makes me feel nice.

  • I will admit that I am an absolute nerd. However, I do make an effort to look good. I think that when you look good, sad as it is, people take you more seriously. I think I am more likely to land internships when I look good. And by good, I mean clean hair, clear skin, clothes that fit, and I keep my weight down. I also am sexually attracted to guys who keep in shape and also have clear skin and good hygiene, thus I try to present myself to be that way.

I used to not give a shit in high school. Now that I am an adult with responsibilities, I made a goal of keeping up with my appearance and thus started caring. Just because I take the time to make myself look good doesn't mean that I still don't indulge in the occasional zombie book or episode of "The Universe" on the history channel. Doing nerdy things makes me feel like I am a person of substance.

define attractive, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And really are there such things as nerd, tomboy, jock etc? don't we all have our own unique personalities? and why do some 'nerds' feel the need to put themselves into this category? but more importantly why do YOU the people feel the need to categorize these people?

Dude, I'm a nerd too, I love playing video games and I used t really like anime. But nerds today are different, they also do other things. I also play rugby, football and cricket. I also love going to the museums and theatre and parks.

Repsect the nerds, one day you will work for one!

Because some of them do more things than worry on their looks. Like "pretty" people take time to do their hair and pick out a good outfit. "Nerds" spend their time studying, or doing good things.

Well, I've never met a stereotype nerd, which is too bad cause I think they're too cute, and I love smart people. I wish there were more nerds that really look like nerds, cause I only see them in movies.

    I myself am a nerd.

We look the way we do because we simply do not take care of ourselves, which is why I've devoted a lot of time to putting down the controller and taking a damn walk so I can lose some weight.

The problem here is not the stereotype that smart people are weak and unattractive. The problem is that we as a society tend to believe the false dichotomy that one can have either muscles or brains but not both. For most of my childhood and early adolescence I was a relatively steryotypical nerd, minus glasses. In early high school, however, when most of my fellow nerds were taking comfort in belittling athletes, calling them stupid to avoid feeling inferior, I decided that I would not not only beat athletes in inteligence, I would challenge them on them on their own turf fitness. After several years of dedicatedly working out, people are often very surprised to find that I do not play football. I have not suffered the corresponding loss of inteligence predicted by inteligence/strength dichotomy theory. I still spend much of my free time reading on various subjects for pleasure, still make good grades, and I still enjoy quality science fiction. I think that there are very few nerds who do not spend at least an hour a day playing computer games. That is an hour that could be used for working out without any loss of academic performance. I think the idea that it must be one or the other is a defence of lazyness.

Staring at computer screens ruins your eyes, thus you need glasses. As well as the previously mentioned dsiregard to fashion. Also nerds tend to be better behaved, and thus are not 'cool'.

Well attractive ppl are dumb pieces of shit!

I have long blonde hair, blue eyes, no glasses and an overall hollywood atractiveness and love star wars oh and what about cosplay?

Cosplay rocks and most of the ppl are very atractive who do it and that is classed as geeky

I'm attracted to ppl who have a good sence of humor and who I can care for (with a ok look)!

Oh and before I forget I am a total fan of rock

Red Hot Chili Peppers, ACDC, MotorHead... ect

    P.S. Glasses are totally sexy!

I'm a nerd. I go to pharmacy school, meaning I study most of the day. I keep lizards because I think they are a nice pet. I like star wars and I think star trek is interesting, though I can't watch it too often since I have no time. Oh yeah and I love lifting weights, boxing, my hot girlfriend and getting so fucked up on the weekends at frat parties that I forget everything I learned over that week. I guess that makes me a semi-nerd?
