Why do millennials look for pleasure as opposed to work?

Every generation has their faults, but this generation seems to have its priorities reversed. Yes, not every last Milennial will fit this shoe, but why do so few seem to hate full time work when they’re capable of commitment, why are the so obsessed with traveling when young (often not having the money to do so)

I just don’t understand their thinking or prioritizing. What happened to people born from 1984-1993? Why do so many seem unfulfilled with their life? I’m not trying to criticize, but I can’t deny the pattern I’m seeing.

So, was born just within your criteria, so might help.

We came of age just when the war on terror began. The world shifted for us, with everyone seeming to panic about the potential unseen enemy. I think this made us want to experience life early, as that constant fear drove us to not wait.

Second many of us were told, time and again, to get through college and everything would be just fine. So we did, and right when we were graduating the economy imploded. Suddenly we are loaded with debt, little prospects for a high paying jobs and competition from older generations as well. So why be money focused when that isn't an option.

Add to that we are told all the time social security won't be available for us, or likely not, yet people expect us to pay for it. They also ignore that it is these same people that ruined the economy and won't make room for our generation to earn enough to do so.

So we grew up at a time of fear, we entered the workforce as it imploded, we had no real prospects for a livable wage and even if we do claw our way up we will be taxed to pay for those that messed it up.

So my question is why shouldn't we?

I'm an boomer and I think your position is well argued and sensible. I would also add that after getting totally ripped off by higher education, millenials will never be able to afford to have families. This will result in the eventual end of white people. Hispanics will breed at higher rates to dominate North America. Global pharmaceutical research will collapse because of lack of talent.

I think everyone agreed with you up to the irrational, racist fears.

I welcome Hispanics as the future majority of North America. It's not their fault higher education has stopped the continuity of the upper middle class. Furthermore, I think there are the same percentage of geniuses born to Hispanics as to white people.

Again, higher education is to blame for the future collapse of pharmaceutical research. If you are a near-genius of any race with ability to handle a research job, you will have to sell your future earnings and family happiness to get the Ph.D. you need to be productive member of the team. When people of this caliber fail to have kids, guess what? There will soon be too few people to do it.

Technological progress in software, computer hardware, networks, aerospace, etc can be done well by above average people holding bachelors degrees. Far cheaper to get, much harder to stop the progress.

Again - agreeing with most of it, except the racism towards mixed race people.
First of all - No one is going to “outbreed” anyone else, and that has a multitude of scientific studies backing it up.
Additionally, those who claim that one race will outpace another ignore the fact that over time, people will intermingle. Yes, the average skin color of the average American may darken some, but everyone will still be American. Denying so ignores the foundations that the country was built upon.

I am not racist, nor do I care about mixed race. You are COMPLETELY missing my point. My point is that no race is going to "outbreed" anyone else. Socio-economic status of the upper middle class is being attacked by higher education. The result will be no families. These are not all white people, but they are the most intelligent people. And, these people, my friend, are vital to the most challenging research out there which is pharma. Denying so ignores the very foundation that our country is built on, which is that special interest politics rules the land.

We are a nation, "Of the people, By the people, For special interest." Don't be so naive.

Also we can't afford to get on the property ladder! I'm from the UK and a millennial. I can't afford to own my own home and don't think I ever will.

its like the 1960s all over again if you get what I mean. every generation seems to have this were the older generation hates on the younger one for any reason and you have some of the younger ones following the older ones in the bashing. its crazy that humanity hasn't broken that cycle but that's just life I guess.

Who decided that this was a fault or that everybody should have their priorities in a certain order? They would probably criticize older generations for having faulty priorities by emphasizing work over everything else. As for why, just consider that those older generations, the ones who worked themselves to death at the expense of everything else(including family), were their parents, and maybe you'll understand.

Generation X was mid 1960's through early 1980's, right before millenials.
