Why do many gay men speak with a lisp?

It let's allows other homosexual men to know that you are also gay. 53
It is simply an accent aquired from associating with other gay men. 38
Gay men do it out of respect for the homosexual male community. 9
They just want to conform in to the mass gay culture. 37
It is uncontrollable and becomes a part of their personality. 69
It is a conscious decision gay men make to alter themselves. 43
When a man gets fucked up the asshole their voice changes. 126
It is totally absurd that a change in sexuality alters your speach. 191

  • Is it a cruel joke that the word "lisp" is spelled with an "s" in it?

Where's the "other" option? All gay men don't talk with a lisp. It's not a phenomenon that exists in all cultures either, so I'd pin it down as something partially physiological/sociological.

Thank you! I know quite a few gay men in person and none of them talk with a lisp.

Perhaps the poll creator should stop watching TV and realize that not all gay men are flamboyant lispers.

Generally the conformation to gay stereotypes by gays is in order to let other people know they gay just by looking at them so that gay people don't need to go to the effort of fidning out who is gay and who isn't when looking for a boyfriend.

Another explanation for some homosexual stereotypical behaviour is that homosexuals identify themselves more with the opposite sex more than heterosexuals do and thus pick up traits of the other gender. I've noticed myself acting more girly after coming out as being bi.

It is totally absurd that a change in sexuality alters your speach.

Hollywood promotes the myth. But really that's just BS.

    Case in point:
John Barrowman was turned down for part of Will in "will & grace" because he wasn't "gay enough"...

Yeah. a real-life gay man wasn't gay enough for the part.... they wanted a stereotype wishy gay man... and not a man who had strength.

Ha that's odd because I've always thought John Barrowman is more camp than the guy who ended up playing Will.

Well he can be campy but he seems like he knows how to turn the charm on for all genders.

        Not to mention those muscles.

ya go watch doctor who or torchwood.

then imagine HIM - meaning Captain Jack - as WIll.

That's the problem I guess. They didn't want a gay man that women find sexy...

Some homosexuals (especially man) aren't homosexual by choice, they are homosexual by science. Some are born with more estrogen than testosterone, which is why they have attractions to men. This isn't true with ALL gay males, of course, but with a number of them. This high amount of estrogen causes them to act in a feminine nature, and when they have a lot of estrogen in their body it causes them to easily have a more feminine figure, feminine instinct, and feminine thoughts. The feminine voice thrown in with the male body causes their voice to sound much different than the usual male voice. Getting fucked in the ass does nothing to your voice. After all, when I left your house your mother sounded exactly the same you fucking homophobe.

      That's bollocks and I can't believe 3 people think it isn't.

      1) How many homosexuals do you know who claim they are gay by choice? How many do you know who are otherwise heterosexual or a-sexual but consciously choose to pretend to be attracted to the same sex?

      2) There is no conclusive evidence to prove homosexual males have higher amounts of oestrogen than heterosexual males. In fact there is no conclusive evidence that hormones are a significant factor in homosexuality at all, although there are plenty of theories.

In conclusion, whilst it's reasonable to speculate that homosexuality is primarily a consequence of nature, not nurture, and that it is due to a hormonal difference or genetic abnormality, there is no FACT, there is only THEORY. Therefore declaring, like you do, that some homosexuals choose homosexuality, and that the lisp is a consequence of oestrogen, is to pretend you know something nobody does. Aight, fam?!

I've never seen a SINGLE gay man do this, and I know an amount of them.
I know 2 people doing this, but they both consider themselves straight.

  • The anwser I think is most logical isn't even on your list. Im guessing that several of the genes that could cause homosexuality also cause a speech impediment because both traits are neighboring genes. This is similar to how schizophrenia and diabetes are commonly seen together for no apperant reason.

'Campness' makes me sick I can't be in the presence of someone like that! I don't understand why, if your gay, that you talk like that, and all the weird movements with the hands. Some people are saying it's because they are more feminine, but do you know ANY women who act like a gay man?

Don't for a single second think that i'm being ignorant here.. I am gay..

I asked a gay guy if he changed his voice when he came out and he just got pissed off. But if he had always spoken like that then he must have known he was gay when he had a girlfriend. It's a strange trend.

Makeup? Seriously? All you need is a gentle exfoliating scrub, clay masque, and a natural facial lotion. Don't wear fucking makeup unless you are glamming that shit to the extreme.
