Why do environmentalists want to conserve fossil fuels?

It is apparent that fossil fuels will not be abandoned or left unused as the profits are too great among other reasons. So why do environmentalists want to conserve gasoline, oil and diesel fuels? If they will be continued to be used untill depleted then wouldn't it make more sense for you to want the fuels to be used up? Upon using the fuels up, actually well before that when it is apparent that we are reaching an end, a change to other fuel sources will HAVE to happen.

I equate it to a mother with a junkie daughter. The mother is entrusted with the last 10 bags of herion on earth. She cannot throw them away and must let her daughter use them untill they are gone. Does she let her daughter use it up quickly so that she can get sober quicker? Or does she ration it out so thinly that her daughter keeps doing a destructive activity for a longer period of time and sobriety comes later than need be?

I don't get it. Is it normal to prolong the inevitable if it's not even in your best interest, in fact even detrimental to your agenda overall?

Humans generally only take the trouble to conserve things where it is important to do so.

Your heroin analogy is flawed in numerous ways. A better analogy would be being in a gallery, feeling a bit cold, and deciding to burn masterpieces to keep warm. This is closer to the truth. What's more, in your analogy you throw all the world's art on the fire at the same time, reasoning that you're going to burn it all anyway.

Your long-term thinking is... what, exactly?

    • My thinking was, to force a change by getting to a critical low. Nothing is changing by conserving.

You totally missed the point of my story.

I understood exactly what you meant, but why destroy all our natural resources when they may be required for whatever resource we exploit next? What if we had limitless power if only we could manufacture a few plastic mouldings and you've burnt off all the fossil fuel?

        Comment Hidden ( show )
  • Petroleum used to make fossil fuels is also vital to drug and plastics manufacturing.

I could spend pages explaining it to you, but I think that would be like teaching a pig to dance.

i'm convinced there already is an alternate energy source and it must be really cheap, because the powers that be are getting richer and richer and richer off of fossil fuel. its not about doing what best for the world or doing whats best for humanity, its all about the money.

Are you aware of the pollution that is caused from burning fossil fuels gets progressively worse and worse? This is not readily disclosed while politicians discuss this issue... The fact that it's the earth resource is secondary to this. Also.. i invite you to look up a guy named Stan Meyer. He invented a car that runs on just water with zero emissions. The car could drive from coast to coast with a few gallons of water. He was murdered after a suspicious visit from the CIA and his invention was sequestered.

He/she says they want to get rid of the fossil fuels quicker so better healthier energy alternatives are made available or are invented quicker.

A couple of years ago in england there was a fuel shortage and everyone went mental, people were panic buying food and stocking up lol.

they want to conserve what took billions of years to make so that humans can keep living their selfish lives for longer. because once its gone, its gone and then the world will turn into anarchy.
so using your "logic", if someone was stranded in the middle of the desert and they only had a small amount of food and water, it would be better just to die than try to conserve what you have and spread it out over a longer period of time to give yourself a chance to find a populated area and survive?
yeah that makes HEAPS of sense to me.....

    • You're confusing comfort with survival.

Good job at taking one aspect of a complex problem and distorting it.

Are you aware that food prices are directly related to fuel prices?

If you truly want knowledge on the issue I recommend the documentary "collapse" with Michael Rupert. It's also a book.

    • Yes, I am aware of how everything is related. Obviously I am not saying to use oil to the last drop at a furious pace and expect life to never change a step. This would happen over time, and it could happen over a shorter period of time instead of dragging it out. That's ALL I'm saying, is why conserve it and drag it out when a change could be effected quicker if we didn't conserve.

I'll check out that book. Thanks for the tip.

Again, I recommend "Collapse". It's both a book and a documentary- currently streaming on netflix.

You are fooling yourself if you don't think "critical low" is upon us. We cannot continue at the current pace, especially since China is trying to catch up to us. It isn't about conservation but figuring out how to transition from our current way of living to one we may not be so accommodating to our laziness. We cannot wake up tomorrow and switch to a different type of fuel. Infrastructure needs to be built. This may take decades to develop. If we deplete everything without a backup plan there will be mass chaos.

You may also want to read "The Last Hours of Ancient Sunlight" by Thom Hartman.

Yes! Collapse would be a great film for this person to watch. It is kind of scary to think about, but the truth normaly is.

The sun will run out of fuel one day too, would you like that to happen quickly so we can all move on, wait don't answer that because you will probably make anouther stupid comparison like it would be better to snort 20 bags of cocaine quickly.
